Jillian took a deep breath, forcing herself to explain calmly. "Bash was in Hartford on the 26th, yes. But I wasn't there on a date. I had work to handle."
Before she could finish, Killian cut her off, every word dripping with venomous sarcasm. "You used work as an excuse to bail on picking up Connor. He was crushed. I didn't want him to be miserable, so I spent the next two days with him. I actually thought you were working. But instead, you were busy parading your boy toy around The Design District Furniture Mall. You even got caught by his fans and dragged so badly you had to delete the photos. Jillian, you're becoming a complete joke."
Jillian let out a bitter, exasperated laugh. She steadied herself, pushing down her anger. "That's just what it looked like on the surface, but you don't know the full context. You can't just take things at face value and accuse me of not caring about my son."
"Do you already have a permanent residence in Hartford?" Killian pressed.
"It's for work. I opened my new company over there."
"You always use work as your ultimate excuse," Killian sneered, clearly not buying a single word.
Jillian instantly lost all desire to explain herself.
She found the entire situation utterly ridiculous. They were divorced. They were supposed to stay out of each other's lives. Her work, her private life, her friends—none of it was any of his business.
Let him think whatever he wanted. She owed him nothing.
"Is Connor done packing?" Jillian abruptly changed the subject, desperate to grab her son and leave.
A maid hovering near the door quickly chimed in, "He should be almost done. I'll go check on him."
Jillian quietly exhaled in relief. She stood up immediately and looked toward the hallway.
She was so focused on waiting for Connor that she completely failed to notice the predatory gaze locked onto her from behind. Killian was staring at her, unblinking.
She was wearing fitted jeans that perfectly accentuated the curve of her hips and her long, slender legs. Her hair was gathered in a loose, effortless knot at the nape of her neck, making her look soft and inviting.
The heated air of the room, mingled with the faint scent of sandalwood, created an atmosphere that was thick, stifling, and dangerously intimate.
Killian suddenly stood up and closed the distance between them.
Unaware of his approach, Jillian spun around and nearly crashed directly into his chest.
Her heart leaped into her throat. She instantly threw her hands up, pressing them flat against his chest to shove him back as she retreated half a step. "Killian, if you're busy, I won't hold you up. As soon as Connor gets here, we'll leave."
