Isla sat comfortably on the couch, her back resting against soft pillows. One of Gabriel’s hands rested gently on her baby bump, while the other picked berries from a small bowl on the table.
“Open your mouth,” Gabriel said softly, smiling as he lifted a berry toward hertips.
Isla laughed lightly and obeyed. “You’re enjoying this too much.”
“I’m feeding my wife and my child. That’s a full-time job,” he replied proudly.
Her phone was pressed firmly against her ear. John’s calm but warm voice filled her ears. Isla could hear the sound of the sea wave.
“How are you feeling today, Isla?” John asked gently. “And how is my grandchild doing?”
Isla’s smile softened. “I’m fine, Father. The baby is fine too, very active,” she said, glancing at Gabriel. “The baby has started kicking a lot.”
John let out a relieved laugh on the other end. “That’s good news. Very good news.”
Gabriel leaned closer, Lowering his voice. “Tell him the baby kicked me earlier.”
Isla smiled, shaking her head. “He kicked Gabriel earlier.”John laughed again, and this time, there was pure joy in it.
“Strong already. He is a Wyndham.”
They talked for a while. He told her how sad her parents were and how he had planned to tell them the truth.
“Thanks father,” her voice almost cracked.
“You should focus on taking care of yoursetf.” He said.
John asked about her meals, her sleep, and if she was comfortable where she was hiding. Isla answered patiently, reassuring him that she was safe and well taken care of
“I promise you, very soon. Very soon you will no longer need to hide from anyone anymore.” John said finally, his voice turning serious, “I mean it, there will be no more reason for you to hide. We are close. Very close to ending this.”
Isla nodded, even though he couldn’t see her. “I trust you, Father.”
Then there was a pause.
“Please pass the phone to Gabriel,” John said.
Isla handed the phone over. Gabriel’s playful expression faded the moment he heard his father’s tone.
“Son,” John began, “we’ve confirmed something important.”Gabriel straightened. “I’m listening.”
“The person Adrian spoke about… the one that has been feeding the enemy about Isla,” John said slowly, “that person is Landon.”
Gabriel felt like the air had been knocked out of his chest.
“What?” he whispered.
“Yes, it is true.” John said, “he’s been feeding information to the enemy,” John continued. “We set a trap, and he walked into it.”
Gabriel closed his eyes briefly. He couldn’t believe that Landon could ever betray his own family. Gabriel ha trusted him so much that he allowed him near Isla.
“I trusted him so much with my wife,” Gabriel said bitterly.
“I know,” John replied. “That’s why this hurts. But don’t worry. We’re handling it.”
They spoke briefly about the next steps. Then the call ended.
Gabriel lowered the phone and sat quietly.
Isla watched him closely. “What happened?” She asked.
He turned to her immediately, pulling her into his arms. ” I’m sorry,” he said. “I should have protected you better.”
Isla was confused for a moment. “You did,” she repliedsoftly. “And you still are.”
His hand slid to her belly again, his face softening now.
