Laurent took the covers and slipped them over his boots. His eyes caught a man’s shirt hanging in the entryway cabinet and two pairs of men’s dress shoes sitting at the bottom of the shoe rack.
“Are they living here with you?” Laurent asked.
Seeing his gaze fixed on the shirt, Ava shook her head. “No, they don’t stay here; they go home at night. That shirt belongs to Keith. It got dirty, so I washed it and hung it there to dry. I’ll give it back to him next time he comes over.”
The slight irritation in Laurent’s chest vanished instantly upon hearing her explanation.

He turned his attention back to Ava. She looked like she had just woken up; her hair was held back by a plaid headband, and she was wearing a light purple loungewear set. On the dining table sat a plate with the remains of breakfast and an empty glass that had held milk.
“It seems I’ve arrived too early. Were you eating?”
“Yeah, just finished.” Ava looked at him and followed up with, “Have you eaten yet?”
“No,” Laurent admitted candidly. “I wanted to see you as soon as possible, so I skipped it.”
Ava glanced at the last two bites of her sandwich. “Have a seat then. I’ll whip up something simple for you. It won’t take long.”
With that, she headed into the kitchen.
Laurent stood in the doorway, watching her back. They hadn’t seen each other for a while, and the rapport they had built during military training felt a bit strained and unfamiliar now. Compared to the others, the nature of his work meant he truly had much less time to spend
with her.
Considering his stature, Ava made two large sandwiches. Turning to see him standing at the kitchen door, she gave him a bright smile. “Food’s ready.”
Laurent stepped forward, took the plates from her, and carried them to the table. Ava grabbed a bottle of milk for him and sat in a nearby chair.
“Are you helping Major Pyler with a mission?” she asked.
Laurent nodded. “I am. Did Ethan tell you?”
“He mentioned a few things, though he didn’t name Major Pyler specifically. I just guessed it was him. So, how long are you staying this time?”

“I did take a photo, though. The whole scene had this really gorgeous, atmospheric quality to
it.”
“You took a photo?” Malory grabbed her arm. “Show us! Maybe we can figure out who it is!”
“Are you serious?” Noelle gave her a flat look. “I sent it straight to Ava the moment I took it. It was someone else’s private moment. Why would I keep it?”
Malory sighed with genuine regret. “Fine. I’ll just wait for the mystery to unwrap find out who Ava’s other matches are eventually.”

The girls all laughed together. They knew Ava had a date today, but not one of them brought it up after running into her. They left it alone without needing to discuss it.
Ava and Laurent arrived home, and she settled onto the couch, still a little flustered. She pulled up her Holoband and checked in, and to her relief, not one of her friends had sent a single question about Laurent. The group chat had gone quiet, and no one had messaged her privately either.
She composed a message and sent it to the group.
