Jace let go of her wrist and took a couple steps back, putting space between them.
Lilly felt warmth in her nose. She touched it and stared at her fingers, now streaked with blood.
“Oh my god, I’m bleeding.” Her voice came out shaky.
Jace glanced at her. It was just a nosebleed.
He grabbed a couple tissues and handed them over. “Tilt your head back. You’ll be fine in a minute.”
Lilly took the tissues and did as he said. “Why am I getting a nosebleed?”
Jace didn’t answer. He just opened the door and walked outside.
The cold air hit him right away, sharp and biting, chasing away the sweet scent of the girl that still lingered around him.
A moment later, Lilly, nosebleed under control, hurried after him. “Jace, wait up. Why do you have so many bruises?”
Jace didn’t slow down, striding away.
Lilly kept pace, talking nonstop at his side. “Did you get those from fighting? You really shouldn’t fight anymore. You should focus on your classes. Seriously, education is your best shot.”
Jace’s face didn’t change at all. It was like she was invisible.
Up ahead, a group of girls appeared, led by Penny. She looked furious.
“Lilly, stop right there.” Penny’s voice rang out. “My friends are with me now. Are you scared yet?”
Lilly stared at Penny, annoyed she had the guts to show up again. She stepped forward. “I’m not scared of you—”
Jace didn’t say a word.
In that moment, Penny took his silence as a yes. Her voice went higher. “You really do like her. You protect her, but you never protected me. What does she have that I don’t? Why?”
Jace’s patience was gone. “Are you leaving or not?”
Penny was crushed. She let out a bitter laugh. “Jace, who do you think you are? You’re just the son of a drug dealer. You have to take care of your mom and your sister.”
“What do you even do when you’re not at school? People might not know, but I do. You work construction, picking up jobs all over the place. You’re nothing but a broke loser.”
Lilly clenched her fists, stepping forward. “Penny, do you really get off on talking about people like that?”
Penny looked Lilly up and down, her gaze landing on the crystal hair clip in Lilly’s hair. “Lilly, is that clip from the new Chanel line? That’s got to be, what, almost forty thousand?”
