After Ella and Lilly drove off, David and Mr. Lynch stayed behind on the curb. David eyed his uncle, a skeptical look on his face. “Are you alright? What’s gotten into you?”
Mr. Lynch didn’t answer until the car had disappeared completely. Then he finally tore his gaze away and looked at David. “What do you mean? I feel great. Honestly, I haven’t felt this good in ages.”
David raised his eyebrows. “Do you want to see yourself on video? The way you were bowing and practically worshipping Ella out there?”
He’d never seen his uncle act like that before.
Mr. Lynch’s face twisted in annoyance. “Bowing? Please. That’s called showing respect to someone worthy, not that you’d understand.”
Respect? For Ella? Since when did that make sense?
David just stared at him, certain his uncle was making things up as he went.
“I was about to talk to Ella,” David said, “so why’d you cut me off? I wanted to ask if she’s really dating that Wyatt guy.”
Mr. Lynch nodded like it was obvious. “I think it’s true.”
David frowned. “And why’s that?”
Mr. Lynch gave David a long look, then shook his head and replied, “Because you’re not good enough for Ella. She deserves someone better.”
With that, Mr. Lynch walked back inside, leaving David standing there in silence.
David couldn’t believe it. The world had seriously flipped upside down. Where was the man who used to insist Ella wasn’t good enough for him? Now he was acting like she was out of David’s league.
…
Ella spent the night at Stellaris Apartments. The next morning, her phone started buzzing and woke her up. It was Wyatt.
Everyone was there: Grandma Jill, Peter, Rachel, Jessa, Logan, Ruby, and Maureen. They were all crammed into the living room, tension thick in the air.
Court officials and bankers were already taping up eviction notices. Grandma Jill grabbed one of them, her face flushed with anger. “What do you think you’re doing? This is my home! Leave right now or I’ll have you all arrested for trespassing!”
The court official just sighed. “You’re free to file a complaint at the courthouse. We’ll be expecting you.”
The banker pulled out a folder and showed them the paperwork. “You mortgaged everything yourselves. The estate, the companies, all of it. We’re here to take legal possession. Please leave now. If not, we’ll have to remove you.”
Grandma Jill clung to Maureen’s arm, desperate. “Maureen, what’s happening? Where’s Doctor E? Where did he take our money?”
Maureen looked completely defeated, no trace of her usual attitude left. “Grandma, I… I got scammed. He wasn’t really Doctor E. His name’s Bobby. He’s just a con artist and now he’s taken everything.”
Jessa and Rachel went pale. They both grabbed Maureen, panic in their voices. “You got scammed? Do you have any idea how much money we put into this? Now our companies are gone too. You’ve ruined us, Maureen. We’re going to lose everything!”
