David stared after Ella for a moment, watching the spot where she’d disappeared. Was it really that simple? Maybe. He didn’t have time to dwell on it, though, because his phone started ringing. He picked up, and Rachel’s voice came through, urgent and breathless.
“Mr. Harmon, something’s wrong. Jessa’s heart started acting up, then she passed out. We’re taking her to the hospital right now.”
David ended the call and rushed out without hesitation.
...
Ella and Wyatt stepped into the lab. Ella pulled her long hair into a low ponytail and slid on a white lab coat.
“I’m gonna the tests on my dad’s ashes right now,” she said, determination in her voice.
Wyatt watched her carefully. “You’ve always thought your father’s death was suspicious. Do you really think the Irvine family had something to do with it?”
Ella nodded. “I do.”
“But your dad was their family. Why would they go that far?”
Ella paused, thinking it over. “Remember what we found out before? Grandma Jill was married for three years and couldn’t get pregnant. She tried everything—herbs, treatments—and finally had my dad.”
Wyatt’s eyes lit up with recognition. “Yeah, I remember. So?”
Finally, the truth was out. Wyatt let out a low whistle. “So he really was adopted. But then Grandma Jill had Peter and Logan right after bringing him into the family. It’s like fate was playing a sick joke on him. Ella, do you have any idea who poisoned your dad? Was it just one person, or were there more?”
Ella’s eyes turned icy, a coldness settling over her face. She hugged the urn, but it felt so cold, no matter how tightly she held it. She couldn’t even imagine what her father must have felt in his last moments, betrayed by his own family. The worst pain wasn’t physical—it was heartbreak.
“I think there was more than one killer,” she said quietly. “I watched their faces today. Grandma Jill, Peter, Rachel, Logan, Ruby... They all looked guilty, like they were hiding something awful. I think they all worked together to poison him.”
Wyatt shook his head, disgusted. “They’re unbelievable. Heartless. What are you going to do, Ella?”
Ella looked at her father’s memorial tablet, her gaze fierce and unflinching. “I’ll make them pay for it. I’ll give the pain my father felt back to them a hundred times over. I’ll take it all back for my father.”
