Jessa let out a scoff. “David, Ella totally knows you’re looking for her. She’s hiding on purpose. She is seriously cunning.”
Grandma Jill shook her head. “Mr. Harmon, you worry too much. Ella’s not going to die.”
Aiden glanced at the Irvine family, all of them so cold and distant. He had to wonder if Ella was really one of them.
Trying to change the mood, Aiden spoke up. “Sir, actually, there’s some good news.”
David looked over. “What is it?”
“Doctor E’s office just called. There was an emergency, so Doctor E couldn’t make it to the banquet, but they’ll be at the hospital tomorrow morning to see Ms. Irvine.”
Everyone froze.
Jessa’s eyes lit up. “Really? Doctor E is coming to see me tomorrow morning?”
Grandma Jill clapped her hands together. “That’s incredible. With someone as talented as Doctor E, Jessa’s heart problem might actually be fixed.”
Maureen grinned. “I was so disappointed not to see Doctor E at the banquet, but we get to meet them first thing in the morning. This is amazing.”
Rachel grabbed Jessa’s hand, her excitement obvious. Jessa’s heart had always been Rachel’s biggest worry, but now, with Doctor E coming, there was finally hope.
David pressed his lips together. Doctor E had already flaked on him too many times. If they didn’t show up this time, he wasn’t sure how much longer he could wait.
He muttered, “Tomorrow, I’ll finally see who this Doctor E really is.”
…
The next morning, Grandma Jill, Jessa, Maureen, and Rachel were up before sunrise. None of them had slept much, too excited to finally meet Doctor E. They dressed early and gathered in the hallway, peeking around every corner, full of nervous energy.
“Where is Doctor E? I’m so anxious. Why aren’t they here yet?” someone whispered.
David stood tall nearby, keeping his cool. Aiden approached quietly. “Sir, Doctor E has arrived.”
At the end of the hall, a group of doctors in white coats appeared, all of them senior staff. They moved together with an air of importance.
Ella simply lifted her hand, signaling him to stop.
Grandma Jill stared in disbelief. “Ella, who are you?”
Maureen frowned. “Ella, what trick are you trying to pull? We’re waiting for Doctor E. Why are you here?”
Ella smiled, lips curving just a little. “But Doctor E is here. Isn’t that who you’ve all been waiting for?”
Rachel blinked. “What do you mean, Ella?”
Ella raised a delicate eyebrow and pointed to the name tag on her coat. “Take a look.”
David’s gaze dropped to her name tag. It read: Doctor E.
Ella was Doctor E!
