Grandma Chelsea glared at Rachel, her voice sharp and fierce. “And you. After everything you've done, you still have the nerve to show up? Flirting with your husband's own brother, plotting against your own daughter… Jessa really is just like you. Today, I’m not letting you off either.”
She swung her cane at Rachel, landing blow after blow. Rachel and Jessa both took a beating, and soon they were sobbing from the pain.
Watching the scene unfold, Lilly nearly wanted to cheer. That was Grandma Chelsea for you. The moment she stepped in, you knew who was in charge.
Once Grandma Chelsea was worn out, she finally stopped. She turned to David, her eyes cold. “Do you realize what you’ve done wrong?”
David looked at her, his tone flat. “Grandma, if you want to hit me, just say it. There’s no need for all these excuses.”
Grandma Chelsea was exasperated.
Lilly shot David a look. “Do you even know something happened to Ella?”
Something happened to Ella?
David froze. His whole posture stiffened. “What do you mean? That’s impossible. I saw her today. She seemed fine.”
Fine wasn’t even the word. She’d had plenty of energy to yell at him, even threw a punch or two.
How could she get into trouble the moment he left?
Grandma Chelsea’s voice was icy. “Ella’s in the hospital.”
David’s voice changed instantly, tight and anxious. “She’s in the hospital? Where? What happened?”
Grandma Chelsea pinned him with her gaze. “Ella is pregnant. Did you know?”
That word hit David right where it hurt. His hands curled slowly into fists. “I knew.”
A sharp slap cracked through the room as Grandma Chelsea’s hand landed on David’s face, turning his head with the force of it.
The whole place went silent and heavy.
Rachel and Jessa exchanged quick glances, each of them scheming in their own way.
Aiden barely dared to breathe. Grandma Chelsea and David had always been close. This was the first time she’d ever been this angry.
Grandma Chelsea jabbed her finger at David. “You bastard! How could you even think that? The baby in Ella’s belly is yours.”
David slowly turned his face back, his expression unreadable.
He really was raised right, always keeping his feelings in check. He knew the baby in Ella’s belly wasn’t his, but even now, he couldn’t bring himself to say it out loud.
