David looked up at Grandma Chelsea, his voice soft. “Grandma, I…”
Lilly stepped in, eyes locked on David. “David, did someone say something to you? Was it her?” She pointed straight at Jessa.
Jessa shifted nervously. “I…”
Lilly’s tone was sharp and cold. “I knew it. It had to be Jessa. She must have told you something, made you think Ella’s baby isn’t yours. Isn’t that right?”
Grandma Chelsea opened her mouth to say something, but Lilly quickly grabbed her arm. “Grandma, let’s go.”
Grandma Chelsea hesitated. “But…”
“Please, just trust me. We need to leave.” Lilly didn’t wait for an answer, pulling Grandma Chelsea toward the door.
When they reached the doorway, Lilly turned back, her eyes burning into David. “Someone kidnapped Ella just now. They dragged her into surgery and tried to force her to lose the baby.”
David went rigid, his face going pale. “What did you just say?”
Lilly gave a cold laugh. “We haven’t figured out who wanted to get rid of Ella’s baby. But…” She glanced at Jessa and Rachel, her meaning clear. “…we caught the people involved. It won’t be long before we know exactly who was behind it.”
She didn’t wait for a response, guiding Grandma Chelsea out of the room.
David turned to Aiden, voice tight. “Is it true?”
Rachel’s voice trembled. “Jessa, this is bad. Ella’s baby is still there. None of the kidnappers or doctors answered when I called just now.”
Jessa felt her stomach drop. They’d been so close, just one step away, and Ella had been saved again. The baby was still there.
“Why? Why didn’t they get rid of the baby?” Jessa’s voice was shaking now. “That baby is a time bomb. If David finds out the truth, what are we going to do? I don’t think we can keep this secret much longer.”
She grabbed Rachel’s hand, her grip tight. “And Mom, what do we do now? What if the kidnappers or the doctors spill everything? Grandma Chelsea and Mr. Lynch are both involved now, and David’s going to see Ella. If they find out we’re the ones behind all this, Grandma Chelsea will destroy us.”
Jessa’s body still ached from earlier. She was terrified of Grandma Chelsea now. The cane had hurt more than she wanted to admit, and for the first time, she was truly scared.
