Rachel looked just as worried, but she squeezed Jessa’s hand. “Jessa, don’t be scared. Seriously, relax. Those kidnappers and the doctors aren’t going to say a word about us.”
…
David made his way to Ella’s VIP hospital room. He was about to go inside when Lilly stopped him right at the door.
She stood in front of him, blocking the way. “You’re not going in.”
David frowned. “Allie, move. I want to check on Ella.”
Lilly glared back. “What’s the point now? When Ella needed you most, you weren’t there. So why bother coming now? I bet Ella doesn’t even want to see you.”
David pressed his lips together, silent.
“I really don’t get it. What kind of spell did Jessa put on you? Why are you always on her side? This time, you hurt Ella so much.”
David’s voice sounded rough. “Allie, you don’t understand.”
“You’re right, I don’t. But if you never tell me anything, how could I? Just answer me honestly. Do you really love Jessa that much?” Lilly’s eyes searched his face, like she was hoping for a different answer. She couldn’t believe David really felt nothing for Ella.
David’s hands curled into fists. “It’s not about love. Jessa is my responsibility.”
“Responsibility? What kind of responsibility?”
David didn’t want to get into it. “Allie, let me in.”
“No. Not unless you explain yourself, right here and now. If you don’t clear things up, you’re not seeing Ella. Not ever.”
David finally spoke, his voice low. “Allie, Jessa saved my life once.”
Lilly’s eyes widened. “What?”
No way. When Ella woke up, she was going to tell her everything.
Ella was smart. She’d figure out what was really going on.
Lilly stepped aside. “Fine, cousin. Go in if you want. But keep your voice down, okay? Ella’s really weak right now. Don’t wake her.”
“Alright.”
David put his hand on the door handle, pushed the door open, and stepped inside.
He saw Ella lying there.
She was stretched out on the hospital bed, her small face pale as paper, not a drop of color in her cheeks. Her lashes were long and still, like she was lost in a deep sleep.
Grandma Chelsea had been by her side the whole time. When she saw David come in, she shot him a glare. “Who said you could come in here?”
