The Genius Ex-Wife’s Revenge Portfolio novel Chapter 509

David just kept quiet. At this point, he felt like the bad guy in every story, the one nobody wanted around. Not a single friendly face in sight.

“Grandma, can I see Ella?” he asked.

Grandma Chelsea let out a long sigh. “Alright.”

He took a seat by the bed and stared at Ella’s face, so pale and fragile it made his heart ache. His hand moved on its own, reaching out to gently touch her cheek. Before he could, Grandma Chelsea smacked his hand away with a sharp slap. She glared at him. “Look all you want, but don’t you dare touch her.”

David had no choice but to pull his hand back. “What did the doctor say? Is the baby okay?”

Grandma Chelsea shot him a look. “Thanks for asking, but Ella and the baby are both fine.”

David pressed his lips together, not sure what else to say.

The hospital room was quiet. In the soft glow of the lamp, Grandma Chelsea’s voice was almost a whisper. “Don’t you want to be a father?”

“I haven’t really thought about it,” David admitted.

“Well, maybe it’s time you did,” she said. “Imagine Ella with a little boy or girl. Maybe they’ll look like you, maybe they’ll look like her. Just think—some little kid calling you Dad, wanting you to pick them up. Wouldn’t that be the cutest thing?”

She smiled, lost in her own daydream, clearly thrilled at the idea of a great-grandchild.

David finally glanced up at her. “Grandma, you still think the baby is mine? You really believe you’re about to have a great-grandchild?”

Grandma Chelsea hesitated. “I…”

He cut her off. “I’ve told you before. The baby isn’t mine. Please, stop getting your hopes up. You’re only going to be disappointed.”

He was trying to protect her, but it just left the room heavy and awkward.

Grandma Chelsea stared at him, at a loss for words. Then she reached out and smacked him lightly on the back of the head. “How did the Harmon family end up with someone so stupid?”
