David’s handsome brow furrowed as he shook his head. “There’s no way it was Jessa,” he said.
Grandma Chelsea snorted. “You trust her that much?”
“It’s not about trust. It just doesn’t make sense. Ella’s baby is Wyatt’s. Jessa and Wyatt barely even know each other. Why would she go out of her way to get rid of Wyatt’s baby? The logic doesn’t add up, does it?”
Grandma Chelsea leaned in, her voice cool. “You’re right. It wouldn’t make sense for Jessa to target Wyatt’s baby… unless the baby isn’t actually Wyatt’s. Right?”
The question caught David off guard. He looked from Grandma Chelsea to Lilly, trying to read their faces. “What are you two getting at?”
Both Grandma Chelsea and Lilly knew David had doubts about the baby. He’d always believed it wasn’t his.
But now, it was time for David to face the truth himself.
“We’re not saying anything, David. The facts will speak for themselves. Go talk to the kidnappers and the doctor. Find out who put them up to this. And if it turns out Jessa’s involved, well, maybe you should start thinking about whose baby Ella is really carrying.”
With that, Grandma Chelsea and Lilly slipped back into the hospital room.
David stayed frozen in the hallway. He was smart. He could hear the hints, the way Grandma Chelsea and Lilly were all but spelling it out for him. They thought the baby was his. But how? He’d seen the pregnancy report, and the timing didn’t line up at all.
Mr. Lynch watched him struggle. “David, you’re one of the sharpest people I know. So why are you fumbling when it comes to love?”
