The kidnappers and the doctor traded uneasy glances, both clearly at their breaking point. “Mr. Harmon, I’ll talk,” Dr. Warren blurted out first.
David’s lips curled into a cool smile. “Good. Go ahead, tell me. Who sent you?”
Dr. Warren swallowed hard. “Mr. Harmon, someone paid us a fortune to take the baby from Ella. That person is…”
He never finished. Dr. Warren suddenly coughed up a mouthful of blood, staining his white coat. David’s face turned sharp. “Somebody, get in here!”
A doctor rushed in from the hallway, kneeling down to check on Dr. Warren. At that moment, the rest of the kidnappers started spitting blood too, one after another, dropping to the ground.
The doctor stood up quickly, face pale. “Mr. Harmon, this is bad. They’ve been poisoned. None of them can talk now.”
David’s usually handsome features went cold as ice. Aiden leaned in close and whispered, “Sir, looks like the mastermind poisoned them ahead of time. Once the job was done, there was no reason to keep them alive. This person is ruthless.”
David hadn’t expected the mastermind to move so fast, right under his nose. With all the suspects incapacitated, there was no one left to question.
He stood up and left the room.
Grandma Chelsea and Lilly were waiting in the hall, both watching his face. “Did you find anything out? Do you know who’s behind this?” Grandma Chelsea asked anxiously.
David just shook his head. Aiden quietly filled them in on everything that had happened.
Grandma Chelsea thumped her cane against the floor, her eyes flashing. “Whoever is behind this is vicious. I really underestimated her.”
Lilly’s voice was tight with frustration. “Now there’s nothing left to investigate. This is so maddening.”
They had all hoped to finally uncover the person responsible, but now every lead had been cut off.
Ella finally let herself relax. The thought of her friend getting hurt because of her had been eating away at her all this time. She placed a hand over her flat stomach, absently checking her own pulse. The baby was fine too. Somehow they’d made it through, safe.
Grandma Chelsea watched her closely. “Ella, why didn’t you tell me you were pregnant? I had to hear it from someone else.”
Ella looked down, feeling guilty. She knew how much Grandma Chelsea wanted a great-grandchild, but things between her and David were complicated. Telling her would only put more pressure on everyone.
“I’m sorry, Grandma…”
Grandma Chelsea’s expression softened immediately. “Silly girl, I should be thanking you. The baby you’re carrying is the future of the Harmon family.” She reached out and gently patted Ella’s stomach.
Just then, Lilly glanced toward the door and spotted David standing there, silent and unmoving. “Mr. Harmon, are you just going to stand there all day?”
Ella looked up and met David’s eyes from across the room. For a second, everything else faded away, and it was just the two of them, seeing each other clearly for the first time in a long while.
