David hovered in the doorway, watching Ella. He looked like he wanted to come in, but Ella just turned away, refusing to meet his eyes. For a second, he seemed frozen in place.
Outside, Rachel’s voice broke the silence. “Mr. Harmon, Jessa’s not feeling well again. She wants to see you. You should go be with her.”
Rachel had shown up, and Jessa was having another one of her episodes. Grandma Chelsea and Lilly heard it too. Grandma Chelsea huffed. “There you go, someone else is calling for you. Why are you still here?”
Lilly shook her head. “Jessa’s complained about her heart a hundred times. I swear, she must have nine lives. Still hanging on just fine.”
David stood tall at the door, eyes still on Ella. She didn’t say anything, just took the glass of warm water Lilly handed her and sipped quietly, her gaze lowered. The light made her profile look soft and almost glowing.
Rachel called out again, a little louder. “Mr. Harmon, did you hear me? Jessa’s still waiting.”
David glanced at Ella one last time, then turned and left.
He actually went to see Jessa.
Grandma Chelsea couldn’t believe it. “He really left. Well, maybe he should just stay there and not come back.”
Ella squeezed her hand. “It’s okay, Grandma. Don’t get upset. It’s not worth making yourself sick over.”
Grandma Chelsea sighed. “Ella, I should’ve found a way to send Jessa overseas back then. If she hadn’t been here, none of this would have happened between you and David.”
Ella gave a small, sad smile. “It’s not that simple, Grandma. You can’t stop love from happening. If Mr. Harmon loves Jessa, it doesn’t matter where she is. His heart would always follow. Even if you’d sent her away, he would have just gone after her.”
