“Ella, why are you crying? You’re pregnant. Crying isn’t good for you or the baby,” Grandma Chelsea said as she quickly grabbed a tissue and dabbed at Ella’s tears.
Ella almost laughed at how absurd it all was. Now she finally got it. Everything made sense. Jessa had been pretending to be her this whole time.
Jessa had stolen her identity and taken credit for saving David. David had believed for years that it was Jessa who had rescued him in that cave.
Ella reached up to touch her neck, searching for the pendant. Her fingers met bare skin. The pendant was gone. That pendant was the one David had given her back then, in that cave. She wasn’t wearing it, but she remembered leaving it at her apartment.
“Ella, what’s really going on? Please, don’t scare me,” Grandma Chelsea pleaded.
The truth hit Ella hard, but she forced herself to calm down. “Grandma, Lilly, I’m okay. Seriously. Jessa is just a liar.”
Lilly stared at her. “Ella, what are you saying?”
Ella took a deep breath. “The person who saved David in the cave all those years ago wasn’t Jessa. It was me.”
Lilly shot up from her seat. “Are you serious? Jessa took your place? That’s so low. She’s unbelievable.”
Grandma Chelsea slapped her leg and shook her head. “I had my doubts. Jessa saving David? Please. She only ever looks out for herself. If there was trouble, she’d be the first to run. Poor David, he’s been fooled all this time.”
Lilly said, “Ella, we should go confront Jessa right now. She can’t keep getting away with this.”
Ella nodded. “I have a pendant, the one David gave me back then. It’s proof. I left it at my apartment. Once he sees it, he’ll know the truth.”
