When David started talking about the past, something in his face changed. The edges softened, and for a moment he didn’t look quite so distant. “Yeah. It was years ago. I’d been badly hurt and ended up lost in the woods. Jessa found me. She saved my life. Without her, I wouldn’t be here. She’s the reason I’m still standing.”
Ella couldn’t help it, she laughed. The sound came out a little shaky, like she wasn’t sure if she wanted to laugh or cry. Her chest felt tight, her heart prickling and buzzing all at once. All this time, she’d thought he’d forgotten. She really believed he didn’t remember her at all. But she was so wrong. He never forgot. She was still right there in his heart, even after all these years.
To have your love answered, even if he’d mistaken someone else for her, felt bittersweet and beautiful.
She tipped her chin up to look at him. “Do you remember what you said in the cave?”
David nodded. “I said I’d take her away. I said I’d give her a home. I said I’d never leave her behind.”
He stared at her, eyes steady and intense. “I meant every word. All these years, I’ve tried to keep that promise. I found Jessa, brought her home, kept her close by. Sometimes it feels like she’s a flower I’ve been tending. I gave her everything I could, all my care, all my patience.”
He reached out and took Ella’s shoulders in his hands. “Ella, do you get it now? I never wanted us to be on different sides. I never wanted to fight you. But I can’t leave Jessa behind. She can be stubborn, maybe even a little scheming, she’s not perfect, but she’s my girl.”
Ella’s eyes grew red and shiny with tears at his words. She blinked, trying to see him through the blur. All these years, he’d done so much. He really had kept his promise. He’d raised Jessa by his side, watched her grow up. Suddenly, all the pain and resentment inside her started to melt away. In a way, he did bring her home... just not the right person. They’d missed each other by a lifetime.
She stared at him, and the tears finally spilled down, falling fast and heavy. David looked shocked, not sure why she was crying. He lifted his hand and gently wiped her cheeks. His voice was low and rough. “Ella, I’m sorry. I already have Jessa.”
He’d already chosen someone. He’d already made his life.
