“Wyatt, how are you? Are you eating well? Has anyone given you a hard time?”
David watched Ella closely. The worry written all over her face was real. It wasn’t the kind you could fake.
David turned away. He didn’t want to watch, didn’t want to listen.
“I’m good, Ella, really. Don’t worry about me. David’s been treating me like royalty since I got here. Great food, comfy bed… I think I’ve even put on some pounds,” Wyatt joked, trying to lighten the mood.
Ella knew he was just trying to make her feel better. She forced a tiny smile.
“Just hang in there a bit longer, Wyatt. I’ve agreed to do Jessa’s surgery. Once it’s done, you’ll be free.”
Wyatt went quiet for a second. He never asked why. He stood by every choice Ella made.
“Alright. Don’t worry about me. I’m fine.”
Ella gripped her phone and stared out at the city’s glowing lights.
“Wyatt, once Jessa’s surgery is over, let’s leave. I don’t want to stay in Rockford Bay anymore.”
Those words made David freeze. The realization hit him hard. Ella was planning to leave.
“Ella, why do you suddenly want to go? You never wanted to leave with me before.”
Ella stared at the faint reflection of herself in the glass, her voice barely above a whisper.
“Because things are settled here now. It makes sense to move on.”
Wyatt said, “Alright. When the time comes, let’s leave together.”
Ella ended the call, handed the phone back to David.
“Here. Your phone.”
David took it, and Ella didn’t hesitate to lay out her terms.
“I’ll do the surgery for Jessa, but you have to let Wyatt out before I begin. I need to see him first. Otherwise, I’m not doing it.”
David nodded. “Fine. I agree.”
“Ella, did you tell Mr. Harmon? Did you tell him it’s you who saved him? Did he believe you?”
Ella let out a small laugh. “No, I didn’t.”
“What? Why not?”
“Lilly, there’s no need to rush. The pendant’s still with Jessa. If I say something now, she’ll just get suspicious. Anyway, I’ve already agreed to do her heart surgery.”
Lilly looked at her, curious. “So, you have a plan, right?”
“When I saved David all those years ago, there was a witness. I’ve already asked someone to track them down. The day of Jessa’s surgery, that witness will be here. That’s when I’ll expose Jessa myself.”
Lilly’s eyes lit up. “That’s amazing, Ella! Jessa’s been pretending to be you for so long, stealing everything that should have been yours. It’s about time she pays for it.”
A cold sharpness flashed in Ella’s eyes.
“Do you know how to destroy someone? You let them reach the top, then watch them crash all the way down. When it happens, she’ll break. That’s the price Jessa will pay for pretending to be me.”
