Jessa and Rachel were already drifting off into their dream world, chatting about the future like nothing could go wrong. Jessa’s smile was so bright it could light up the whole room. “This is perfect. Now I just have to wait for Ella to do my surgery.”
…
David stood alone in the hallway, making no move to leave. The lights overhead were dim, barely brushing his shoulders with a soft glow and wrapping him in shadows.
Aiden came over, his footsteps quiet. “Sir, are we going back to the office tonight or to Stellaris Apartments?”
David barely moved his lips. “You should go back.”
“Yes, sir.” Aiden left him alone.
David wandered over to the window. Ella’s conversation with Wyatt kept echoing in his mind. She’d said she didn’t want to stay in Rockford Bay. She was leaving. Wyatt was taking her away.
She was having Wyatt’s baby. They’d probably be happy together, wouldn’t they?
He still had Jessa. She was his responsibility, something he couldn’t just walk away from. He’d probably marry her someday, right?
They would both move on. Two lives, two separate paths. That was supposed to be a good thing.
It really was supposed to be good.
David kept telling himself, over and over, that this was the best thing for both him and Ella. He tried to use logic, to force himself to believe it, but his chest was in so much pain. Somewhere deep inside, it felt like something precious was slipping away, little by little, no matter how hard he tried to hold onto it.
The feeling of loss cut deep, sharper than he ever expected.
But there was nothing he could do.
…
Once Ella fell asleep, Lilly slipped out of the room as quietly as she could. She spotted Jace sitting on a bench in the hallway, still there, dressed in black and looking as cool and distant as ever.
Lilly ran over without thinking twice. “Jace, thank you so much. If you hadn’t been there, we never would’ve rescued Ella in time.”
