Jace looked over at Mr. Lynch and greeted him politely. “Mr. Lynch.”
Mr. Lynch nodded, then reached his hand out to his daughter. “Lilly, come on, let’s go home.”
Lilly glanced at Jace, a little disappointed. She had been hoping Jace would walk her home, but now that her dad was here, she didn’t really have a choice. She went to stand by her father.
Mr. Lynch turned to Jace, his voice kind. “Jace, it’s already late. Why don’t you come with us? I can give you a ride.”
Jace shook his head. “Thank you, Mr. Lynch, but I’ll head back by myself.”
Mr. Lynch nodded. “Alright. Be careful on your way home. If you run into any trouble, just give me a call.”
With that, Mr. Lynch turned with Lilly and headed out. As they walked away, Lilly looked back at Jace, waving at him, her hand small and a little reluctant. Jace stood where he was, watching her until she was gone.
...
The ride home was quiet at first. Lilly and her dad sat in the back seat while the chauffeur drove. Mr. Lynch broke the silence. “Allie, tell me the truth. What’s going on between you and Jace? Are you two dating?”
Lilly’s cheeks grew hot, but she didn’t try to hide it. “Dad, I like Jace.”
Mr. Lynch sighed. “You’re being silly. You and Jace just aren’t right for each other.”
