Lilly stood there, completely shocked. She stared at her father, her eyes wide. “Dad, are you serious?”
Mr. Lynch gave her a gentle smile. “Of course I am. But like I said earlier, it depends on what Jace wants. He might not want to be your tutor. He might not want to work for the company either.”
Lilly frowned. “Dad, what are you actually trying to say?”
He looked at her, a little more serious this time. “Jace has chosen a different kind of life. He lives on the edge, always moving, never settling down. I don’t think he can give you the stability you deserve.”
Mr. Lynch had handpicked Jace for the university, hoping he’d have a bright future. But once Jace got there, he started skipping classes. Mr. Lynch couldn’t stand to see such a talented kid waste his potential, so he’d talked to Jace in private, more than once. He had all the right connections, all the right doors to open for Jace. With someone that smart, the sky was the limit.
But Jace turned him down every single time. That’s when Mr. Lynch realized Jace was set on living life his own way.
Lilly had always been the Lynch family’s pride and joy, their little princess, sheltered and protected since she was born. She and Jace just seemed worlds apart.
Lilly shook her head, not really getting it. “Dad, please don’t try to stop me from being with Jace. I really like him. I mean it.”
Mr. Lynch let out a quiet sigh, not saying anything for a moment. Then he asked, “What about Lucas?”
Lilly rolled her eyes. “Dad, why are you bringing up Lucas again? He doesn’t even like me. He’s all over Sarah these days.”
Mr. Lynch just smiled, not giving anything away. Maybe Lucas wasn’t interested in Lilly before, but feelings can change. Who really knows what’s going on in a guy’s head?
Lilly slipped her arm through her father’s. “Dad, I know you want what’s best for me. But this is my life, okay? Right now, I really like Jace. I just want to be with him.”
Mr. Lynch tapped her lightly on the forehead. “Let’s see if Jace actually wants to be with you first.”
Lilly fell quiet. He was right. It didn’t matter how much she liked Jace if he didn’t feel the same way.
She pulled out her phone and scrolled through her messages with Jace.
