Mr. Lynch was deep in his philosophical mood again.

Lilly rolled her eyes. “Dad, I don’t even like Lucas. Why would I bother with him? And don’t underestimate me. Just watch, I’ll get Jace. You’ll see.”

Mr. Lynch just chuckled quietly and let it go.

Soon enough, the day of Jessa’s surgery arrived. Her heart condition had always weighed on the Irvine family, so everyone was there. Grandma Jill, Peter, Rachel, Logan, Ruby, and Maureen all came to support her. Ella had agreed to perform the operation, and the whole family saw that as their big win. Grandma Jill, especially, wasn’t going to miss her chance to gloat.

Grandma Jill beamed at Jessa. “Jessa, today’s finally the day. The whole family’s here for you.”

Jessa loved being the center of attention. It was her favorite feeling. She smiled sweetly. “Thank you, Grandma.”

Maureen leaned in. “Jessa, now that Mr. Harmon is so in love with you and he’s completely cut off Ella, you should marry him as soon as you recover.”

Grandma Jill nodded. “That’s right. You are finally going to be his wife.”

Jessa’s grin widened. She’d fantasized about marrying David more times than she could count. Once her heart was fixed, her real life would finally begin.
