Rachel and Peter chimed in, both grinning. “Jessa, we’ll be right outside waiting for you.” Jessa gave a quick nod. “Okay.”
David turned to Ella, his expression serious. “Ella, I’m trusting Jessa to you. Please, don’t do anything reckless.” Honestly, he was still trying to wrap his head around how quickly Ella had agreed to the surgery. She’d changed so much, and that unsettled him.
Fiona shot back, her voice sharp. “What’s that supposed to mean, Mr. Harmon? Are you threatening Ella for Jessa’s sake now?”
Lilly crossed her arms, scowling. “Mr. Harmon, you’ll regret this.”
David’s eyebrows drew together, deep in thought. He ignored Fiona and Lilly, focusing only on Ella. Ella’s tone was cool and steady. “Don’t worry, Mr. Harmon. Jessa, let’s head to the OR.”
Jessa gave David a bright wave. “I’m going in. With you here, there’s no way Ella would dare mess with me.” With David backing her up, Jessa felt like nothing could touch her.
Ella and Jessa walked to the entrance of the operating room. Suddenly, a voice called out. “Ella?”
Ella turned around and finally saw the person she’d been waiting for. It was Felix, the village doctor.
Felix came over, his face lighting up. “Ella, you’ve grown so much.” When Ella was sent to live in the countryside as a child, Felix was one of the rare people who had shown her kindness. She’d always been grateful for that.
“Felix, it’s been years. It’s really good to see you.”
Felix smiled warmly. “I’m doing well. I heard you’re a big-time doctor now. That’s amazing. Even when you were little, you had a real talent for medicine. I always knew you’d do something special. I guess I was right,” he said with a hearty laugh.
Jessa eyed Felix up and down, clearly unimpressed by his rustic look. Her patience was thin. “Ella, can we stop catching up? We need to get moving with the surgery.”
