Lilly let out a cold little laugh. “What’s the hurry, Jessa? Felix is an old friend of yours, isn’t he? Didn’t you find him back in the day to help save Mr. Harmon?”
Fiona chimed in, pretending to be surprised. “Wait, Jessa, why do you seem like you don’t even recognize Felix?”
David was starting to notice something was off too. Earlier, Jessa had treated Felix like he was a nobody, not just a stranger, but like she could hardly stand him. He turned to her, his eyes searching. “You really don’t know Felix?”
Jessa panicked. “I—I was so young back then. I just forgot for a second, but it’s coming back to me now. He’s Felix. David, my heart really hurts. Can we please just do the surgery?”
Rachel felt the tension growing. She never thought something like this would blow up right before the operation. She tried to step in and calm everyone down. “Mr. Harmon, this isn’t the time. We need to focus on the surgery first. You can talk about the past when Jessa’s out of danger.”
Grandma Jill was anxious too. “She’s right, Mr. Harmon. Jessa’s heart is what matters right now. The surgery has to come first.”
Ella’s clear voice suddenly rang out, slicing through the chaos. “Jessa, seriously? You’re still pretending, even now?”
Lilly smirked. “You really look ridiculous trying to keep your story straight, Jessa.”
David turned to Ella, his frustration growing. “What are you all trying to say?”
Fiona stepped forward. “Mr. Harmon, it’s not about picking a fight. We’re just telling you the truth.”
David’s voice was sharp. “What truth?”
Felix stepped closer, looking David in the eye. “Why are you so sure Jessa is the girl who saved your life?”
David pulled away from her and took a couple of steps back. “Don’t touch me. My head is spinning right now.”
He turned to Felix. “Are you sure you’re not mistaken? She has the pendant. That has to mean she’s the girl.”
Jessa nodded over and over, almost frantic. “It’s me. I swear.”
Lilly gave David a sly look. “Mr. Harmon, I think there’s something you need to see. This should clear everything up for you.”
David looked over as Lilly pulled out her phone and started a video. On the screen, Jessa walked into Ella’s living room. She waited until Ella was distracted, then slipped the pendant into her own pocket.
Jessa’s breath caught in her throat. She realized there were cameras in the Irvine home all along. Her secret had been recorded, and there was no way to explain it away now.
