Ella stepped aside and opened the door. “Come in.”
David walked in, and for a moment, they just stood there together in the living room. Ella’s voice was calm and distant. “Mr. Harmon, is there something you need?”
The way she called him “Mr. Harmon” felt like a wall going up between them, shutting him out.
David took a step closer. “Ella, please, don’t be so cold. All these years, I had no idea it was you. I’ve been searching for you.”
She nodded, her expression unreadable. “I know. I know everything now.”
He reached for her shoulders, holding on as if she might disappear. “Ella, just give me another chance. We’ve already lost so much time. I don’t want to lose you again.”
Ella gently pushed him away. “David, it’s too late. I gave you so many chances, more than you realize. When we got divorced, I waited for you to come back to me. When Jessa and I were kidnapped, I hoped you’d show up and save me. When I was lying on that operating table, desperate for you to come and stop them, I still wished you’d be there. But every single time I needed you, you pushed me away. Again and again, until I finally got used to living without you. I don’t need you anymore.”
David felt like he could hardly breathe, his chest tight with regret. “Ella, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry…”
There were a thousand things he wanted to say, but all that came out was that apology.
“I promised you I’d take you away, give you a real home. But I broke that promise. I left you alone in the countryside for so long.”
“When I was in a coma, you stayed by my side, but I didn’t even recognize you. Worse, I kept hurting you for Jessa’s sake. I know I let you down, Ella. I know all of it.”
