David’s voice was gentle but desperate. “Ella, it’s not. Please, just give me one more chance. We can still fix this, I promise.”
She stepped back, putting a little distance between them, and wiped away her tears. “Mr. Harmon, you’ve said everything you needed to say. There’s nothing left. You should go.”
He tried to protest, voice cracking. “No, Ella, I…”
But she cut him off, her hand resting protectively over her stomach. “Mr. Harmon, it’s late. I’m tired and I want to sleep. Please, just leave.”
David’s eyes dropped to her stomach. His voice turned rough, almost pleading. “Ella, are you worried about the baby? Even if the child isn’t mine, I’ll treat them like my own. I’ll love you, I’ll love the baby too.”
Ella stayed silent, staring at him with unreadable eyes.
He still thought the baby wasn’t his.
She let it go. There was no point explaining, not now. Once she settled things with the Irvine family, she’d be gone anyway. She didn’t owe David any explanations.
“Mr. Harmon, please leave. Now.”
He stood there, taking in how distant she was, then spoke softly. “Ella, it’s really late. Get some rest. I’ll come back tomorrow.”
David walked out. He lingered in the hallway, not quite ready to go anywhere else. He just wanted to be close, to keep watch over Ella, even from a distance.
They’d already lost so much time. All he wanted now was to be with her, to make up for everything they missed.
He was scared to leave. What if she disappeared as soon as he turned away? After all these years apart, they’d only just found each other again. He couldn’t risk losing her, not again.
Jessa was curled up in the corner, her hair tangled, eyes wild. The second she saw him, she tried to scramble up. “David, you’re here! I knew you’d come for me. After everything we’ve been through, I don’t believe you could just throw me away like this!”
She tried to run to him, but the bodyguards pinned her back.
Aiden set a chair behind David. He sat down, looking at Jessa with a cold, unreadable gaze. “What do you want to say?”
Jessa’s voice trembled. “David, I admit it. I pretended to be Ella, but you’re so amazing, you stand out no matter where you are. I fell for you right away. I just… I wanted to be Ella. I wanted you to love me.”
David’s lips curled, but his eyes stayed icy. “You keep talking about all these years between us, but what was there really? Everything I felt was for Ella. You were just pretending to be her. Even though I lost all those years with Ella, you were only ever her shadow. That’s all you ever were.”
He called her Ella’s shadow.
