The Genius Ex-Wife’s Revenge Portfolio novel Chapter 586

Jace went quiet for a moment, then gently pulled Lilly’s hands off him. He turned around and looked her in the eye. “Lilly, are you just pitying me?”

Lilly shook her head. “No, that’s not it. I meant it. I know how talented you are, I just want…”

Jace’s lips twisted into a bitter smile. “You want. See? It’s all about what you want. You’re always trying to decide what’s best for me.”

Lilly shook her head again, more desperately this time. “Jace, that’s not true, I’m not—”

“Don’t bother denying it. You want to control me, admit it. But I get it, you’re used to getting your way. You’ve never seen me as an equal, have you? You just want to run my life.”

His words were so cold, they cut right through her. Lilly’s eyes went red, tears stinging. “Jace, I told you, that’s not what this is. Is that really what you think of me?”

She just cared about him. She worried about him. She wanted to protect him.

He could be so much more; he didn’t have to stay stuck in a place like this.

But he wouldn’t listen to her. He thought the worst of her.

Was she really so selfish in his eyes?

Jace saw her eyes glistening with tears, her whole face soft and vulnerable. His hands curled into fists at his sides. “Lilly, just leave. We’re from different worlds. Isn’t Lucas always hanging around you anyway? He seems like he’s trying to be a better person. You should be with him. Even if you’re not, you’ll find someone way better than me.”

Lilly’s lashes trembled and fat tears fell down her cheeks. “Jace, why do you always push me away? Aren’t we a couple? If something’s wrong, we can talk.”

He let out a sharp laugh. “A couple? Who told you that?”

“But all those times before, we…”

Jace just shrugged, looking her up and down in a way that made her feel small. His smile was cruel. “We were just having fun. That’s all.”

Jace went stiff.

At that moment, Lucas rushed over. “Jace, are you picking on Lilly?”

He grabbed Jace by the collar and punched him hard in the face.

Jace didn’t dodge. Blood welled up at the corner of his mouth.

He wiped it away with the back of his hand, looking wild and defiant.

Lilly flinched at the sight. She hadn’t expected Lucas to show up so suddenly. She grabbed his arm. “Stop it, Lucas, that’s enough!”

Lucas pointed at Jace, shouting, “Jace, Lilly chose you. That was a gift, and you don’t even get it. Don’t you know your own worth? You come from nothing, just some street kid now. Go look in the mirror. You’re not good enough for her!”
