What was he even talking about? Joanna managed to wriggle her hand free and smacked his arm. “Get off me. You might want to, but I don’t.”
Moss just looked at her, voice dropping. “You really don’t want to?”
“I don’t.” She meant it. Just thinking about him tangled up in bed with Louise made her want to recoil.
Moss got stubborn. “Alright, just deal with it.”
He leaned down and kissed her, hard. Joanna struggled, pushing at his shoulders, but then a voice called from outside the door.
“Hello, Ms. Irvine.”
Ella was here.
Joanna shoved Moss away, scrambling to sit up. “Ella’s here!”
Moss released her, moving to sit at the edge of the bed.
A moment later, there was a knock, and Ella’s clear, steady voice drifted in. “Mr. Wade? Ms. Johnson?”
Joanna jumped up, rushing to fix her hair and straighten her clothes. She opened the door, forcing a smile. “Ella, hey, you’re here.”
Ella stood neatly in the hallway. “How is Mr. Wade? Is he alright?”
Joanna stepped aside, letting her in. “He’s over there.”
Ella walked straight to Moss and looked him over. “Mr. Wade, are you okay?”
Moss shook his head. He looked miserable. “I feel hot. Like, burning up. It isn’t normal.”
“Let me see your hand.”
He held it out. Ella checked his pulse, her brow knitting together almost instantly. “Mr. Wade, you’ve been drugged.”
Joanna’s heart skipped a beat. “What? Ella, what kind of drug?”
Ella kept her expression calm. “I can’t break down this drug, but there is someone who can help.”
“Who?”
“You, Ms. Johnson.”
Joanna froze. She could feel Moss’s gaze on her, hot and insistent. Suddenly, she understood exactly what Ella meant. All he needed was... her.
She shook her head. “No way. I’m not saving him.”
Ella arched an eyebrow, almost smiling. She’d always known Moss and Joanna were too proud for their own good. That’s how Louise managed to get between them in the first place.
“Ms. Johnson, if you aren’t willing to save Mr. Wade, you have two choices. You can find another woman for him, or you can stand by and watch his blood vessels burst. Your call. I’ll leave you both to think about it.”
With that, Ella turned and walked out.
“Wait, Ella!” Joanna called after her, but the door had already closed.
