Victoria hurried into JY Tech, her heart pounding. She needed to see her brother, and nothing was going to stop her. As soon as she stepped into the lobby, though, the receptionist blocked her path.
The woman gave Victoria a quick once-over, her expression unreadable. “Hi there. Can I help you?”
“I’m looking for Jason,” Victoria replied, trying to keep her voice steady.
The receptionist looked her up and down again, almost like she was sizing up the competition. “Do you have an appointment?”
Victoria shook her head. “No appointment. But could you please let him know I’m here? My name’s Victoria. Jason is my brother.”
The receptionist’s eyes widened. “Wait, you’re his sister?”
Victoria nodded. “Yes, I’m his little sister. He’ll want to see me. Please, it’s really urgent.”
The receptionist let out a short laugh. “What’s going on today? First, a woman came in saying she was Mr. Farill’s friend, and now you’re saying you’re his sister. Should I just start calling myself his wife?”
Victoria felt her cheeks burn. “I’m not lying. Jason is really my brother. I swear!”
The receptionist waved her hand, clearly bored. “Look, if you don’t have an appointment, you’re not seeing him. You should leave.”
Victoria clenched her fists. “You can’t be serious…”
That’s when Hanna came out. “What’s happening here?”
The receptionist’s attitude did a 180. “Hanna, you are down here.”
Hanna shrugged. “Jason’s still in a meeting. I didn’t want to interrupt, so I came downstairs for a walk. What’s all the fuss?”
