Meanwhile, Wynter and Dalton had returned to the Dominion Grand Hotel.
The moment Wynter opened the door, she saw Wolf sitting on the bed, puffing out his cheeks in a sulk.
"Boss, where did you go? Why didn't you take me with you?" Wolf grumbled, still pouting.
Wynter paused for a beat. "I just went out to handle something. It was early, and you were still sleeping."
Wolf flopped around on the bed like a restless kid. "You could've just woken me up! Instead, you left me behind and even took Mr. Leprechaun with you!"
Wynter gave a helpless smile. "I'll take you next time. Eat something first. I brought you KFC."
At that, Wolf's eyes lit up. "Sweet! Alright, I'll eat first, then."
Wynter handed the food over and walked to the desk, flipping open her laptop.
Dalton took a seat beside her. "Are you looking into the people behind the company?"
Wynter nodded slightly. "When I went in for the interview, I felt like someone was watching me through the camera. Even during the medical exam, something felt off."
Dalton's thumb brushed her cheek. "I trust your instincts. But if there is any real proof, it's probably only in the hands of the company's owner."
As they spoke, Wynter had already opened a website and typed in Stellar Corporation. The screen started loading, and a few seconds later, the results came up. The majority shareholder was someone from Havenia.
Wynter did a quick dig and found out who he was. His record was suspiciously clean. Freddy used to hold a regular job, but quit just a week before Stellar Corporation launched. When the company started business, he was suddenly the boss.
Wynter's lips curved slightly. "Interesting... A nobody sets up a company in just a week and offers benefits most firms can't compete with. Either they're genuinely rich, or they're a pawn on the surface."
Dalton replied, "I think it's the latter. Nobody turns down real money unless they're getting something even bigger in return."
"We'll run a quiet investigation tomorrow," Wynter said, turning to Wolf. "Tomorrow, stay at the hotel and wait for my message."
Wolf turned his head. "What am I going to do?"
Wynter lowered her voice. "Hack into the company's surveillance system when I text you."
Wolf patted his chest confidently. "Leave it to me."
…
The next day, Wynter and Dalton finished getting ready and left together. They got into a car and headed toward Stellar Corporation.
Wynter glanced over. "Are you nervous? You've never worked a day in your life."
"And how is that supposed to make me nervous?" Dalton chuckled.
She said seriously, "I know nothing can affect you, but you should at least pretend to be a little nervous. After all, we're just newbies in their eyes."
Dalton brushed a strand of hair from her forehead. "Alright, my lady."
Wynter glanced sideways at him. "When there are people around, I'm your cousin. If we slip up and they get suspicious, everything goes down the drain."
His eyes crinkled as he smiled. "Got it, my dear cousin."
As they spoke, the car pulled up in front of Stellar Corporation. Wynter paid the fare before they stepped out and walked inside.
Jefferson was already waiting at the entrance. When he spotted them, he came over and said, "Not bad. You arrive half an hour early on your first day."
Wynter smiled. "Of course. We want to leave a good impression. We wouldn't want the other departments gossiping about us, would we?"
Jefferson laughed. "Great. You're Wynter Quinnell, right? Stick with me, and I won't let you two go hungry."
Instantly, Wynter started flattering him. "I've heard that about you, Mr. Paige. You'd starve yourself before letting us go hungry."
Hearing that, Jefferson couldn't hide his grin. "Alright, alright. Let's get your onboarding started."
He walked ahead, with Wynter and Dalton following behind.
Dalton leaned in and whispered in her ear, "You really know how to play the office game."
Wynter murmured, "He might be a way in. That kind of approach seems to work well on him."
Soon, Jefferson brought them into a meeting room and handed over two employment contracts. "Here are your contracts. Go over them carefully. If anything looks off, let me know."
Wynter didn't even glance at it before signing her name. Dalton followed suit without hesitation.
Jefferson raised an eyebrow. "Did you not even take a good look? What if we're running a scam?"
Wynter smiled sweetly. "We're not worth much. Besides, the company is far too nice to ever do that."
"Not many people think like that," Jefferson said, clearly more impressed now. "Wait here. I'll pass these along to Mr. Artie."
As he turned to leave, Wynter lifted her brows slightly. "By the way, Mr. Paige, what about Adalyn, the girl who came in with us yesterday?"
Jefferson paused for a second before he replied, "She was temporarily assigned to another department."
With that, Jefferson walked out of the meeting room. The moment he stepped outside, the smile on his face vanished.
Wynter's expression shifted just as quickly, her brows slightly furrowing. "I just noticed there was something wrong with the signature field on that contract."
Dalton gave a slight nod. "I know. I felt it the moment I touched the page."
Wynter looked at him. "Then why did you sign it right after me? What if it was just a blank page with your name on it?"
Dalton chuckled. "If you're not afraid, why should I be?"
A serious expression crept onto Wynter's face. "The contract itself is fine. The issue is with the signature field."
He agreed. "The paper there's thicker than the rest. It seems like there's a blank sheet underneath."
Wynter frowned. "What would they need a blank sheet for? Unless…"
A thought flashed through her mind.
Just then, Jefferson returned. "Come on. It's time to introduce you to the other employees."
So, Wynter and Dalton got up and followed him out.
Jefferson announced loudly, "Everyone, these are our two new employees, Wynter Quinnell and Dalton Yarwood. They are from Cascadia. Let's give them a warm round of applause!"
The room filled with applause, but it was mixed with some unpleasant whispers.
"Cascadians? I wonder what Mr. Paige saw in them. They're probably just good-looking but otherwise useless."
"They must have pulled some strings. Everyone knows Cascadians aren't exactly popular, yet they landed a job at a great company like ours."
Jefferson cleared his throat. "They are our new colleagues. Whether from Cascadia or Havenia, once you're at Stellar Corporation, you're family. Understood?"
"Yes, Mr. Paige."
"Alright, back to work."
He looked at a woman to the side. "This is Thea Estrada. Thea, you're responsible for them. Tell them specifically what needs to be done. I've got other things to handle."
Thea nodded, her tone icy. "Follow me."
She didn't even spare Wynter a glance, pointing toward two empty desks. "These are your workstations. You'll mostly be organizing files and assisting other team members with daily tasks. If anything's beyond your scope, come to me."
