Dalton gave a small nod. "I know. You can remove the silver needles now."
Wynter turned slightly to the side. "How do you always manage to guess everything correctly?"
As she spoke, she removed the silver needles. The Willbinder Potion was colorless and tasteless. She could only rely on the pain and stimulation of the needles piercing the skin to maintain clarity. Even then, she still had to pretend to be under someone else's control.
Dalton chuckled softly. "Mr. Artie had Mr. Paige stand guard at the door the whole time. He wouldn't let anyone else in. Mr. Artie isn't your match when it comes to strength, even less so when it comes to intelligence.
"Since they drugged you and took advantage of your muddled state to extract information, they'd need someone outside to keep watch."
Wynter raised a thumb. "You pieced everything together just from those few clues. Impressive."
Just then, a couple burst into the room, shouting, "Thea! Thea!"
"Thea, where are you?"
Their noisy voices echoed throughout the office.
Jefferson immediately stepped forward. "I'm Mr. Paige. What seems to be the matter?"
Thea's father, Klaus Estrada, continued, "Mr. Paige? I'm Thea's father. I want to know why my daughter hasn't returned home since she left work yesterday. We've tried calling her, but her phone's off, and she's not at the company, either. Where exactly is my daughter?"
Jefferson sighed. "You're asking about Thea? She resigned from our company yesterday. We truly regret it, but there's nothing we can do. As for where she went, only she would know."
Klaus shook his head firmly. "That's impossible. My daughter told me she loved this company. She'd never leave as long as she wasn't fired. Why would she suddenly resign without even telling us?"
As soon as those words were spoken, a wave of commotion swept through the office.
"What? Thea resigned? I just saw her yesterday, and she seemed totally fine. She told me she planned to stay at Stellar Corporation for the long haul!"
"I walked out with her after work yesterday. She never mentioned anything about quitting. Could this be some kind of misunderstanding?"
"Don't tell me it's because she went to confront those two newcomers from the mainland yesterday, and they took revenge on her!"
Jefferson shouted over the noise, "Quiet!"
Then, he turned to Klaus before continuing, "I understand how both of you must be feeling. How about this? I'll take you to our boss. He can explain the situation to you personally."
Tears welled in Klaus' eyes. "No. Say it here! There are more people around here."
Jefferson's gaze darkened. "Alright. We'll do it here."
As he spoke, he pulled out a resignation form from his pocket. "This is Thea's resignation letter. The date and signature were filled in by Thea herself. No one could have forced her, right?
"Secondly, I was just as surprised by her resignation, but everyone has their own choices. Just because we offer good benefits doesn't mean our employees are forbidden from leaving.
"And third, I understand that you're worried as parents, but we also do not know why she didn't tell you. We're a company, not her home."
Klaus took the piece of paper with trembling fingers, staring at the handwriting. "This... this can't be. My daughter wouldn't just quit like this."
Jefferson calmly took the paper back. "This document is legally valid. If you believe our company forced her into resigning, go ahead and call the police. They can do a handwriting analysis.
"However, if you continue to cause a disturbance here, I'll also be forced to call the authorities and report you for disrupting company operations."
Klaus collapsed to the ground. "But my daughter wouldn't do something so foolish. Could it be… was it because we had an argument a few days ago?"
Jefferson looked down at him with detached authority. "Her personal life isn't our concern. If you want to call the police, be my guest. But for now, I'll have to ask the two of you to leave. Once the police arrive, we'll cooperate with the investigation."
Elodie Lynton, Thea's mother, had no choice but to help Klaus to his feet and lead him out.
After watching them leave, Jefferson turned back to the rest of the employees. "What are you people staring at? Are all your tasks finished?"
With that, he turned and walked into Freddy's office.
"Mr. Artie, Thea's parents came and made a scene," Jefferson said quietly. "I managed to send them out."
Freddy chuckled lightly. "How could they not? That girl's their one and only golden goose. They depend on her for everything—food, bills, and daily life. Of course they would panic now that their money tree is gone."
Jefferson nodded. "If they call the cops later, I'll follow the standard protocol. Since it's her own signature, it has nothing to do with us."
Hearing that, Freddy looked at him with approval. "Not bad, Jefferson. It looks like you've learned how to handle things well. I should consider assigning you more responsibilities."
Jefferson bowed slightly. "Thank you for the trust, Mr. Artie. I'll give my all to carry out whatever tasks you assign."
Freddy waved his hand. "Go. We still have things to deal with tonight."
Just then, Wynter recalled the piece of paper Jefferson had taken out. It was exactly the same as the one she had seen in the safe.
Wynter finally figured that this was their plan all along. As long as they produced Thea's resignation letter, it would sever all ties between her and the company. No matter what happened to her, the company wouldn't be held responsible.
Wynter gently shook her head. "She's not a bad person. Now that something has happened to her, this doesn't sit right with me."
Dalton tried to console her. "I know you want to save people, but sometimes fate plays cruel tricks. There are so many people in this world. You can't save them all."
Wynter nodded. "I know. Even if we save her this time, something like this will eventually happen again. We need to get rid of these parasites, fast."
…
Time passed quickly.
The employees in the office began packing up, getting ready to leave for the day.
As Wynter was tidying up, Jefferson came over and said quietly, "Wynter, are you free tonight? The boss is inviting you two to dinner."
Wynter's eyes narrowed slightly. "Mr. Artie is treating us? That's great! I was just worrying about how I'd afford my next meal. Thank you so much!"
Jefferson smiled. "There's no need to be so polite. It's a sign of the boss' appreciation. But don't tell anyone else, alright? This is a private dinner for just the two of you."
Wynter nodded enthusiastically. "Can I bring my little brother?"
She pointed at Wolf, who was sleeping face-down on the desk. "He's been following me around every day and barely eats. He's getting way too skinny."
Jefferson glanced at Wolf. "You can bring him. I'll allow it."
A single tear welled up in Wynter's eye. "Thank you, Mr. Paige!"
Jefferson nodded lightly. "There's no need to thank me. Just sit tight for a while. We'll head out together once the other employees have left."
"Okay," Wynter replied with a nod.
As soon as Jefferson walked away, Wynter's expression immediately shifted. "It looks like we are about to become two little lambs walking into the slaughterhouse."
"Lambs? What lambs? Roasted whole lamb?" Wolf suddenly sat up. "Boss! Are we getting roasted lamb tonight?"
Wynter rubbed her forehead. "Not just roasted lamb. We'll be having all your favorite meats, too."
Wolf gulped. "Mm! That sounds perfect!"
Meanwhile, inside the office, Jefferson turned to Freddy. "I told them. We're good to go."
He handed over a pill. "Here's the antidote to the incense."
Freddy took it. "Let's head out, then. Our guest has been waiting long enough."
Freddy laughed. "So what if I did? You're just a brat."
"Fine." Wolf stared at him coldly. "You'll regret this."
Freddy didn't reply. He simply waved a hand, and the guards dragged Wolf along.
When they pushed open the villa doors, it was clear that aside from the study, the place was filled with medical equipment—every kind imaginable.
Wynter and Dalton were placed on surgical tables. Across from them, two elderly men lay on other tables.
Freddy headed toward the study, where a man inside was swirling a glass of red wine and watching him.
Freddy instantly dropped to his knees. "You came personally, Mr. Zachburg?"
The man, Rosenth Zachburg, smiled. "I wouldn't have seen how well you're doing if I hadn't."
Freddy forced a laugh. "You flatter me. I was brought up by you. Naturally, everything I do is per your instruction."
Rosenth's expression suddenly turned cold. "So, you do still remember who you belong to. Who gave you the guts to raise the price?"
Freddy immediately bowed as low as he could. "I was just trying to help you make more profit. We're the only ones in this business on both sides of the border. They have high demand, so naturally, the price should rise."
Rosenth approached and grabbed Freddy by the throat. "Are you teaching me how to do business now?"
Freddy struggled to breathe. "Mr… Mr. Zachburg, I only did it for your sake…"
Only then did Rosenth slowly release him.
Freddy took a deep breath before continuing, "We do all this for profit, after all."
Rosenth's eyes gleamed dangerously. "Profit? I've got more money than I can spend. What I need is influence."
He pointed to the two elderly men lying on the operating tables. "Those two have high status overseas. The fact that they came to me is a sign of respect. If I ever see you defy me again, you'll be the one strapped to the table, enjoying a painless death."
Freddy bowed deeply. "I'm sorry, Mr. Zachburg. It won't happen again."
Rosenth turned away. "Get lost."
Freddy quickly got to his feet and walked out.
Before long, a group of doctors arrived, and Freddy led them inside.
"There are two operations scheduled for today."
The lead doctor nodded. "Understood." He then turned to the team behind him. "Everyone, get the equipment ready."
After completing their sanitization procedures, the doctors entered the operating room.
The lead doctor glanced at Wynter and Dalton, who were lying on the surgical tables. His eyes narrowed slightly. "What a shame. They're both so good-looking. Better luck with your next life, I suppose."
With that, he picked up a syringe filled with anesthetic. He was just about to inject Wynter when a commotion erupted at the door.
Freddy turned toward the noise and saw Wolf surrounded by a group of people.
He burst out laughing. "Beat him up. Just don't kill him."
Then, turning back to the lead doctor, he said, "Go on. Time doesn't wait."
The doctor nodded and turned back toward Wynter to administer the anesthetic, only to find that the beautiful face on the table had opened her eyes.
She was staring at him with a sharp, icy gaze.
