The masked man stared at Wynter. "A mainlander? When did I say that foreign countries were better? I was just drawing a comparison. Isn't the mainland a living example?"
Wynter raised her eyebrows. "Take off your mask, foreigner."
As she spoke, she stood on tiptoe and leaped onto the circular platform. The man's mask fell to the ground with a flick of her hand, revealing blond hair and blue eyes—Matthias.
Matthias, realizing that she wasn't on his side, took a few steps back. "What are you planning to do?"
Wynter turned to the side. "Why do you foreigners refuse to change your ways? Are dirty tricks all you know? Must you use public opinion to incite others in order to achieve your goals?"
Matthias shook his head. "I don't know what you're talking about!"
He then continued loudly, "Start moving, everyone! We must drive out the mainlanders! We can't allow them to defile Havenia!"
Wynter promptly slapped him. "Since when were foreigners the ones calling the shots in Cascadian affairs?"
Matthias stumbled, a handprint appearing on his face, and gritted his teeth. "Fuck! How dare you slap me?"
Wynter grabbed him by the neck. "Don't worry. From now on, I'm going to make it so even thinking of death feels like a luxury to you."
The Havenians below the platform started speaking up one after another.
"He's right. We have to drive the other mainlanders away as soon as possible. If we let any of them escape the net, they'll definitely turn out to be potential hazards."
"Let's go! Anything else can wait until we've driven out the mainlanders!"
Wynter snatched the megaphone from Matthias and said in a deep voice, "Are you all even Cascadians at all? Can you not even see through such a flimsy plot? Why is every post online suddenly slandering the mainland?
"Bot accounts make up 70 percent of the comments and shares these posts have received, and their IP addresses are mostly from foreign countries. It's because this is something they've been scheming for a long time—target Havenia and take control over it!"
As soon as her words left her mouth, a clamor rose from below the platform.
"How's that possible? The captions and photos in the posts were very real. They didn't look fake at all!"
"Don't be fooled by this mainlander, everyone! She's just bluffing so that we don't drive the mainlanders away!"
"That's right! We can't just trust her because of the few things she's said!"
Wynter's eyes darkened slightly. "I don't know who among you has been paid to side with the foreigners and lead the narrative, but you can all think about it. If everything really was as the posts claimed, would Havenia be as prosperous as it is now?
"Havenia is Cascadian territory and isn't a city that can be easily influenced by just anyone. Havenians are also a part of Cascadia. Which country would want its own people to doubt each other?
"Don't be blinded by the false picture in front of you. Seeing isn't always believing."
Wynter knew that these people's judgment had already been affected by those paid to skew the narrative. If they were allowed to have their way, Havenia would really fall to ruin in their hands.
A man wearing glasses stepped out of the crowd. "How would you explain the topics mentioned in those trending posts? In other words, organ trafficking and gambling!"
Hearing this, Wynter waved a hand and had someone bring Freddy onto the platform. "I'll let him do the explaining. I believe you'll understand after hearing him out."
She then leaned down toward Freddy. "I'll give you a chance to make up for your crimes, Mr. Artie. If your answer is unsatisfactory, you'll be getting no more chances."
After everyone saw Freddy, they began to harbor some doubts.
"Isn't that Freddy Artie, Stellar Corporation's boss? I previously tried to apply to his company but wasn't selected. What does this incident have to do with him?"
"I think I remember hearing that an employee at Mr. Artie's company went missing after resigning. The police investigated the case but didn't manage to find any leads."
Freddy's eyes narrowed slightly. "You're basically asking me to sign my own death warrant. Do you think these people will let me off if I reveal the truth in front of all of them?"
Wynter smiled faintly. "You have no other choice right now, Mr. Artie. This isn't a negotiation. It doesn't matter whether you speak up or not—I have other ways to prove my claims. I'm just giving you a chance here."
Freddy gritted his teeth. "You're such a ruthless woman, Wynter Quinnell."
Wynter stood up. "If you'd please, Mr. Artie."
So, Freddy had no choice but to speak, also standing up slowly. "She's right. The mainlanders weren't responsible for the incidents mentioned in the trending posts. Instead, they were framed and made into scapegoats by another party.
"By using these incidents as an excuse to sling mud at the mainlanders, they incited your emotions for their own benefit."
The moment the words left his mouth, the audience exploded into uproar.
"Mr. Artie… Are you serious? If the mainlanders weren't the ones responsible, then who are the culprits? Who would be capable of this?"
"Impossible. Mr. Artie must also be in cahoots with that woman. They were whispering to each other just now! Don't be fooled by him, everyone!"
Dalton had also noticed one person deliberately trying to instigate the Havenians. He looked at Wolf and said, "Throw that person out and leave this to your boss."
Wolf nodded and walked directly up to the instigator.
Seeing Wolf approach, the man began, "What do you want, little brat—"
Wolf said nothing. He simply grabbed the man with both hands and lifted him up, then threw him toward the platform. He landed right in front of Wynter.
The man hissed in pain from the landing. "What are you doing? They actually got physical with us! Where are our men? How dare they lay a hand on us Havenians? Can't you all tell their true motives?"
Wynter eyed him darkly. "What do you think?"
As she spoke, she quickly snatched his phone away.
After fiddling with it for a short while, she showed the screen to the audience. "Look, everyone. This person has been trying to lead the narrative since just now, so I took his phone. As expected, he was paid to do this."
The screen showed that the man had received 200 thousand dollars in his bank account the day before yesterday.
Seeing this, he instantly started panicking. "No… That was from a friend returning me money."
Wynter looked at him and asked, "Does your friend live overseas?"
He gritted his teeth. "Yes, my friend lives overseas and owes me money."
Wynter let out a soft "oh", then asked in Emstian, "What's your friend's name?"
This stunned the man, who asked dumbly, "What?"
Wynter chuckled. "Since your friend is from overseas, I asked you what your friend's name is, but you didn't understand me. It looks like this friend of yours isn't important to you."
The man immediately tried to weasel his way out of the situation. "I just couldn't hear you just now."
Wynter didn't pay him any more attention and turned to the audience. "I don't want to watch all of you be deceived, so think carefully about it. If chaos were to break out in Havenia, who stands to gain from it? The foreigners.
"Please open your eyes. Don't end up being fooled by others only to thank them in ignorance instead of condemning them.
"I also saw that there were bloodstains along the streets on the way here. My question is, do innocent people need to shoulder the responsibility for these incidents?
"Don't be spurred into action just because of some hearsay or a few words from others. Always consider the 'why' in everything."
At that moment, a large group of students walked forward.
"The lady is right. Please don't be fooled by those people! The posts were all falsified! My older sister once showed me pictures of the mainland's beautiful scenery. It's not a remote and desolate place at all!"
"Those foreigners just want to cover up the truth. They're concealing facts about the mainland in order to make you think that the mainland is bad news for Havenia."
"We're students. Back then, there was a professor who gave us a lecture, and every word out of his mouth was meant to incite us. He wanted us to do the same as all of you and participate in this operation to drive away the mainlanders.
"If not for this lady, we would really have believed the professor and become accomplices to the villain. We're also Havenians! Please don't be blinded by the real villains!"
