Meanwhile, Charis, acting in his capacity as the person in charge, summoned the members of the Havenia Chamber of Commerce.
This time, Charis wore a full-face mask. He stood up and looked at everyone present. "The reason I've gathered you here today is because there's something I need to tell you."
The people below glanced at one another.
"Please don't beat around the bush, Mr. Boso. We're listening."
"That's right. You're the chamber's chamber."
The others chimed in with agreement.
"Alright, then I'll speak frankly." Charis' eyes narrowed slightly. "I know you've all made quite some money over the years while working with me, but there's a big one this time. Are you brave enough to follow?"
"A big one? How much can we make?"
"I've been a little tight on cash lately. Who would say no to more money?"
"Don't keep us guessing, Mr. Boso."
Their eyes were filled with greed.
Charis smirked. "You've probably heard about the current trends in the stock market. If you want to make money, invest in two Havenia stocks—Prosperity Holdings and Pacific Energy. Once the market opens next week, you'll make several times your investment."
"Are you serious, Mr. Boso?"
"He should be telling the truth. These two stocks have been rising constantly over the past few days. The chairman must be confident if he's announcing it like this."
"Of course." Charis waved his hand. "I've already dumped a huge amount of money into these two stocks. You're my people—I wouldn't want to earn money without bringing you guys along."
"Mr. Boso, is there any risk involved?" one of them asked cautiously. "The prices have been going up for a while. What if there's a sudden drop?"
"I'm worried about that, too. The stock market isn't like anything else. It could keep rising, or it could crash all of a sudden."
Charis remained calm. "It's up to how courageous you are. Be ready to count your money till your hands go numb next week if you're bold enough to follow me. If not, feel free to leave."
After a brief hesitation, the group stood up one after another.
"We'll follow the chairman's wisdom!"
"That's right! Mr. Boso has helped us make a lot of money. How can we continue making money with him if we can't even muster this bit of courage?"
"Then, all of you should hurry and buy the two stocks," Charis said in a deep voice. "It'll be our celebration feast by the time next week's banquet comes."
"You're right, Mr. Boso! We'll go now!" The crowd rushed toward the door, afraid that they'd miss their chance if they hesitated any longer.
As he watched them leave, Charis curled his lips into a sneer. "It's finally time to slaughter the fattened lambs."
Compared to everything that came before, this stock market play was the real show. It wouldn't just cripple Havenia's economy, but it would also reward his pockets handsomely.
He muttered under his breath, "I really am a genius. When I move, I shake all of Havenia!"
...
That night, many people gathered outside Havenia's exchange center. Time was running out, and many still hadn't made their purchases.
Some wanted to continue buying Prosperity Holdings and Pacific Energy, while others had followed the trend after hearing that Driscoll and Antoine were buying MIRXES and ZENTRIX Holdings.
"As members of the Hensley family, we must understand the importance of gratitude and repaying kindness."
"I understand, Grandpa." Alaskey looked up. "But I think she might be from the mainland. She's probably returned there by now."
"No, I don't believe so," Baxter narrowed his eyes slightly before continuing, "I'm a good judge of character. That young woman isn't just any ordinary person. She knew when to advance and when to retreat, as well as see things in a bigger picture.
"She didn't know us, yet she still took action to help us. She must have her own reasons for coming to Havenia."
Alaskey said softly, "That's true. If not for her, your body might not have held on. You wouldn't have returned to the Hensley family to reclaim the position of family head, either."
"Whether I lead the family or not doesn't matter." Baxter gently stroked his face. "What matters more is paving the way for you. Though my health has mostly recovered, there's no denying that I'm already old. It could be a few months or a few years… but soon, my time will come."
"No!" Alaskey gripped Baxter's hand tightly. "Grandpa, you'll live a long and healthy life!"
"It's enough that you feel that way." Baxter smiled. "I just worry that those with ill intentions in the family will target you once I'm gone. That's why I want you to find that savior and form a good relationship with her. It will only bring you benefit, not harm."
Alaskey raised his head. "I understand, Grandpa."
"Good boy." Baxter leaned on his cane. "I'll continue moving around and building connections for you, so that you'll have a smoother path to becoming the next family head."
Alaskey nodded. "Alright, I'll do as you say."
Baxter turned to the side. "I just remembered that the Chamber of Commerce banquet in Havenia is happening in two days. I've never been fond of the current head, but I have to bring you along this time. You need to meet people and build your network."
"The Chamber of Commerce banquet?" Alaskey blinked in confusion. "But Grandpa, I've never seen you attend one before. You don't have to do things you dislike just for me."
"It's not about doing things I dislike." Baxter coughed lightly. "The chamber's former leader was from the mainland, but a foreigner took over later. I've never been fond of foreigners, so naturally, I stopped attending."
