Baxter quoted, "Talent is fated to rise to the top. All it requires is the right trigger.
"Alaskey has led a sheltered life. But now that he's encountered a prominent figure like you, Ms. Quinnell, he'll be able to stand on his own two feet in the future. He'll lead the Hensleys down a road of lasting growth."
"Are you that confident in me, Mr. Hensley Senior?" Wynter couldn't help but ask curiously. "We've met only briefly, yet you would dare entrust your grandson to me."
Baxter smiled. "I believe I have a good eye for people. I've worked hard my entire life for the Hensley family's sake. If nobody among the Hensleys can take on my heavy responsibilities once I pass on, then it won't be long until the family falls to ruin. But if there is, then the family will be able to thrive.
"All of you, on the other hand, must have come to Havenia with a task at hand. Our family may not control everything in Havenia, but we do have a certain amount of power and influence. Therefore, our family's existence will also be of help to you."
Wynter narrowed her eyes slightly. It was true that there were many limitations to what she could do in Havenia. The Quinnell and Yarwood families' reach within Havenia was naturally incomparable to that of the local families. It was better to make an ally than an enemy.
She nodded lightly. "Okay. I'll give you my word, but I don't have that much time available to mentor Alaskey."
Baxter waved a dismissive hand. "You won't have to teach him these things. I'll take care of that. The takeaway here is that the Hensley family will sink or swim with you, Ms. Quinnell."
Wynter smiled. "Naturally. You're a very insightful person, Mr. Hensley Senior."
Baxter narrowed his eyes slightly. "It's because I can sense that your arrival in Havenia will cause a major reshuffle here, Ms. Quinnell. Even the most restless waves will ultimately be drowned out by a terrific storm, after all."
"Here's the wine, Grandpa," Alaskey called out at that moment, after which he carried several glasses of wine over to Baxter and Wynter.
Baxter nodded. "I have some things to tell you, Alaskey."
As he did so, Wynter returned to Dalton's side.
"Does Baxter intend to win you over?" Dalton asked as soon as she sat down.
Wynter lifted her gaze. "Yes. I can more or less guess that Mr. Hensley Senior wishes to secure a future for Alaskey."
Antoine was slightly shocked to hear this. "To think that the head of the Hensley family wants to get in your good books… It looks like he thinks very highly of you, Ms. Quinnell."
Wynter's lip curled slightly. "It's nothing but superficial admiration. In truth, I also have to be capable.
"It's just like in a case where two wealthy businessmen could have collaborated, yet one chooses to seek the cooperation of a poor man instead—it's the poor man's talents that caught the businessman's eye."
Dalton commented quietly, "It's apparent what kind of people Baxter and Alaskey are. Since they're both stuck on the same boat, what happens next is going to be interesting."
Wynter nodded. "If they weren't of good character, I wouldn't have helped them back then."
Meanwhile, Charis, alongside two members of the Chamber of Commerce, had been keeping a constant eye on Wynter and her group.
"How has this woman offended you, Mr. Boso? What has she done to make you this angry?"
"That's right! If you're not comfortable around her, we'll find an excuse to make things difficult for her. I refuse to believe that Baxter will be able to protect her!"
Charis narrowed his eyes. "Don't ask questions you're not supposed to know the answer to."
He hadn't expected Baxter to come forward to take Wynter and the others away. He would've already driven them out of Havenia otherwise.
He'd investigated and discovered that the Hensley family had no ties to the Quinnell and Yarwood families at all. Why, then, did Baxter suddenly show up to help them just now?
Moreover, judging from Baxter's expression, he hadn't been aware of their true identities at all.
Charis looked at the two chamber members with him. "Both of you, go and inform the relevant parties that the auction will start in half an hour. While you're at it, get two people to pretend to approach them and find out what they're discussing."
