Meanwhile, just a few hundred miles away from Velaris Luxe, a car had been parked there the entire time.
The person inside had been waiting for Charis to arrive. However, even after the crowd inside had dispersed, Charis was nowhere to be seen. A sense of unease crept in. He quickly started the car and drove away from the scene.
A short while later, the vehicle came to a stop.
He got out and pushed open a door before stepping inside. "Sir, I waited there for a long time but didn't see Charis at all."
"You didn't see him?" The old man turned around. "Charis had sent a stand-in to appear on stage to conceal his identity. It's very likely he's already been taken if we haven't heard from him."
The man's expression darkened. "Then we need to find him quickly, sir. He'll become a threat since he knows so much."
"No rush," the old man said as he clasped his hands behind his back. "Charis is important but dispensable. Plus, his task is complete. The profits from the stock market will all be transferred to the offshore accounts."
The man's tone grew solemn. "But he's seen my face. We'll be in trouble if he identifies me."
The older man raised a hand, revealing a mask in his palm. "Put this on, and no one will recognize you. As for Charis, he'll be of no use to us anymore once the market opens."
The man still looked uneasy. "What if Charis betrays us?"
"He cares too much about his family to do so," the old man said with a cold glint in his gaze. "I've raised him to power and can just as easily crush him."
The man gave a slight nod. "But I'll still inform the others to switch locations, in case something goes wrong."
"Go." The old man gave a few light coughs. "It's time for those people to start moving. The sacred item must be found."
"Understood, sir." He bowed slightly. "I'll take my leave."
The old man nodded. After the car drove off, he couldn't help but cough up a mouthful of dark blood. He was all too aware of his body's state. However, as of now, there was still no suitable replacement.
The ten people with rare constitution he had absorbed previously in Colifernia could only help suppress the illness temporarily. If he wanted to fully recover, he had to find the sacred item.
He looked up, muttering to himself, "You've ruined so many of my plans… Once the time comes, I'll make sure you disappear for good. Go join your dear Mr. Quinnell Senior in the afterlife."
…
Wynter had no idea about the conversation that took place. After leaving, she headed straight to a safe house.
Dalton was already waiting at the door. He walked over to Wynter when he saw her getting out of the car. "Did you settle things with the Chamber of Commerce?"
"It's all sorted," Wynter replied, stepping to the side. "We cleared out all the parasites. Only Baxter, Antoine, Conrad, and a few others are left."
Dalton's voice was gentle. "That's good. At least we've fulfilled Mr. Quinnell Senior's final wish before heading back to Colifernia. The chamber is back in the Quinnell family's hands."
"Exactly." Wynter looked up at the sky. "Grandpa Gordon would be happy."
"Of course he would." Dalton glanced at her. "As you had guessed, I've brought Charis over."
After a moment, Wynter retracted her gaze. "Let's go meet the real Charis."
"Wolf is entertaining him," Dalton said as he pointed inside the safe house. "He's probably close to a breakdown."
Wynter nodded and followed him in.
Just as they stepped through the door, they heard a miserable cry from inside.
"Please, just stop already… I can't take it anymore." Charis gasped, drenched in cold sweat.
