"I'll make sure to complete the mission!" Wolf said excitedly as he stood beside Charis, waving his fist in front of his face.
Seeing this, Charis swallowed nervously. He was genuinely terrified of getting beaten up. Ever since he started working in Havenia, he had never encountered anyone who resorted to violence so quickly and unreasonably. Everyone who met him had always treated him with respect and deference.
Wynter's lips curved faintly. "What are you trying to do in Havenia?"
The moment she spoke, Wolf was already poised to strike.
"What I'm here to do…" Charis glanced at Wolf's fist, and fear flickered in his eyes. "Don't you already know everything? Why bother asking me?"
As soon as he finished, Wolf's palm struck his face. "Who gave you permission to talk to the boss with that tone? Answer whatever she asks!"
Charis endured the sting on his face. "Gambling, organ trafficking, and stirring up unrest and chaos in Havenia."
"Is that all?" Wynter's gaze remained calm. "Think carefully."
Charis' eyes widened. It was true he hadn't mentioned the stock market, but very few people knew about it. He didn't believe Wynter could possibly be aware of it.
"That's it," Charis said firmly. "Just those things. But it's all been ruined already, anyway."
Wynter rested her chin on her hand and looked at Wolf. "Wolf, he's one of those who won't cry until he sees the coffin. He's yours."
Seeing this, Charis tried to shake off his handcuffs. "Wait! I told you everything I know. What else do you want from me?"
No one responded to him. The only answer he got was Wolf's flurry of punches, each one landing squarely on his face.
"Stop! Stop!" Charis screamed, his voice hoarse. "I'll talk! There was also the stock market!"
Only then did Wynter wave a hand, signaling Wolf to stop. "Explain in detail."
Realizing he could no longer hide anything, Charis gave in. "We weren't planning to act in the stock market initially, but we had no choice after you wrecked the rest of our plans.
"The idea was to manipulate the market and, at the right moment, expose the corrupt politicians who accepted bribes. The goal was to make Havenia's people lose trust in their leaders and throw the city into chaos."
"Is that it?" Wynter looked up. "Not a single word about money?"
"Money…" Charis' gaze visibly grew unsteady. "None of it would reach me even if we made a lot through the stock market. It all flows into offshore accounts."
Wynter nodded lightly. "I know it won't reach your hands. You're merely an unimportant pawn, after all. Charis, let me tell you a story."
Charis blinked in confusion. "What story?"
Wynter slowly stood up. "A long time ago, a man passed the civil service exam. Through hard work, he finally became a chauffeur and assistant in the municipal department. An old man took a liking to him and began to train him both openly and in secret.
"One day, this assistant accidentally saw a side of the old man that was rather abnormal. He tried to pretend he hadn't seen anything, but the old man grew suspicious.
"Eventually, the assistant thought the old man had forgotten. He had no idea the trap had already been set. It was just waiting for him to walk into it.
"Whether he lived or died depended on a single decision. The assistant was torn because he realized that the old man was no longer the man he used to be.
