Alaskey paused, then said, "I get it now. You're trying to pave the way for me, Grandpa. You've never made the wrong judgment about people. As long as I stay with Ms. Quinnell, she'll back us Hensleys even if something were to happen to the family in the future."
Baxter caressed his face. "That's right. You're very smart to have figured that out, Alaskey. I'm very happy about it, but you missed one thing. I'm afraid Havenia is just a drop in the ocean of Ms. Quinnell's ambitions, and it was simply a stop along her way.
"The most important thing is to form a good relationship with her—it's in our best interests to become her friend. If we were to become her enemies, the Hensley family may be ruined in an instant."
Alaskey's pupils contracted. "Is she that powerful?"
Baxter nodded. "Judging from what we know, it might happen even faster than we expect. Otherwise, how could the Chamber of Commerce that Charis has been running for so long collapse within a single day?
"Ms. Quinnell knows how to plan. She takes everyone and everything into account beforehand so that the final results end up exactly as she expects.
"Therefore, when I'm no longer around in the future, I'll be leaving the Hensley family in your hands."
Hearing that, Alaskey trembled. "You're still young, Grandpa. You'll live a long life."
"Silly brat," Baxter said affectionately before coughing lightly a few times. "I know my own body best. It'll run out of steam not too far into the future."
Alaskey clenched his fists. "It's all because of that person. Why aren't you looking into it, Grandpa?"
Baxter narrowed his eyes slightly. "When the time comes, that person will become restless once more."
As soon as the words left his mouth, a middle-aged man walked through the door. "Your health still hasn't improved, Dad. The doctor I just found prescribed some medicine for you. Once I'm done heating it up, I'll bring it to you."
The newcomer was Baxter's son, Marshall Hensley.
Baxter nodded in response. "Just place the medicine here."
Marshall took a few steps closer to him. "Absolutely not. The doctor said that the medicine needs to be taken while hot to be effective. Your health's never going to improve otherwise."
At the same time, he subconsciously stared at the ledgers on the desk. "Moreover, you're getting on in years. I can share the burden of all this work with you. Otherwise, people are going to call me an ungrateful son."
"Where were you when Grandpa was driven out back then?" Alaskey shouted with red-rimmed eyes. "Nobody in the family was concerned for Grandpa!"
Marshall glanced at him out of the corner of his eye. "Are you lecturing me? Why are you butting in when the adults are talking? Besides, I was dealing with other matters back then. If I'd known that something had happened on Dad's side, I'd have rushed back as soon as possible.
"I also investigated and found out that Uncle Maximilian was the one behind everything. He wanted to drive Dad out and usurp the position of family head."
Baxter was livid. "Enough. Stop bringing up the past. As for your uncle, I've already driven him out."
Marshall nodded emphatically. "As expected, you're a sensible person, Dad. Still, you should drink this medicine quickly, or it'll no longer be effective."
"Bring it here, then," Baxter instructed, coughing heavily. "Fortunately, I still have a 'good' son like you."
Seeing this, Marshall strode over to him. "Of course. Don't move, Dad. I'll feed you the medicine personally."
"That's just as well," Baxter said, nodding his head before shaking it lightly. "Is there something you've forgotten to tell me, Marshall?"
Marshall scooped up a spoonful of the warm liquid medicine and held it out to Baxter. When he heard the question, he paused with his hand in midair. "Huh? T-There isn't."
Baxter closed his eyes and said wearily, "Take him away."
As soon as he gave the command, four to five people appeared around them and restrained Marshall, who looked stupefied.
