Sherman was a man in his 60s with graying hair. However, he looked ten years older with that solemn expression on his face, and he had deeply etched wrinkles in the corners of his eyes.
"What exactly happened?" he asked.
His voice was low and restrained, but his shaking hands gave away the turmoil in his heart.
Manuel turned to look at him and replied with trembling lips, "Mr. Linne… the Drakevein Pendant has gone missing. The safe is intact, but the cultural relic inside has vanished."
Sherman stumbled and only managed to stay standing by holding onto the control panel for support.
The Drakevein Pendant was one of Cascadia's precious cultural relics. It not only had a long history but also had a pattern of nine different dragons carved into it. It was not just a priceless treasure but also one of Cascadian culture's symbols.
"T-Take some men to investigate all the civilians in the museum. I'll inform the Cultural Heritage Center," Sherman instructed shakily before taking a deep breath. "Nobody is to touch anything before the people from the Cultural Heritage Center arrive!"
Manuel nodded vigorously. Just as he walked out of the control room, prepared to lead people on the investigation, Wynter approached him with Dalton in tow.
"May I ask what happened?" asked Wynter.
Manuel frowned. "The Drakevein Pendant is missing. Please gather in one spot. We need to search all civilians in the museum."
Wynter wordlessly took out her credentials from the Cultural Heritage Center and handed them to him. "I'm from the Cultural Heritage Center."
After taking the documents and verifying them with Wynter, Manuel turned to look at Sherman. "There are people from the Cultural Heritage Center on site, Mr. Linne!"
Sherman walked out of the control room at this and followed Manuel's gaze to Wynter. "Why haven't I seen you before?"
"I've been out of town lately," Wynter replied calmly. "I originally came to take a look around Havenia Museum. I didn't expect an incident to occur while I was here."
Sherman didn't doubt her explanation. "Since you're here from the Cultural Heritage Center, we'll act according to your instructions."
Wynter hummed in acknowledgement and said, "Take me to where the Drakevein Pendant was stored."
Sherman turned to the side. "This way, please. I'll lead you there."
They passed through three doors in total—a door with a fingerprint scanner, a door with a retinal scanner, and lastly, a door with a safety valve.
After releasing the safety valve, Wynter walked straight into the room. There was nothing wrong with the other exhibits, and only the cabinet containing the Drakevein Pendant was opened. It was very obvious that the Drakevein Pendant was the target.
She scanned the entire room, refusing to overlook a single detail.
"Mr. Linne," Wynter called out, turning around. "Who has permission to come in here?"
Sherman replied solemnly, "Nobody other than me. It's because the first two doors require my fingerprints and a scan of my eye. Nobody will be able to get in otherwise."
Wynter nodded lightly. "Understood. Please take me to the control room next."
"Okay."
Sherman walked ahead of her, heading toward the control room.
As they passed through the great hall, Wynter stopped and said, "There's no need to search these civilians anymore, Mr. Shields. They're not the thieves."
Manuel was stunned. "How do you know that? What if one of them has the Drakevein Pendant?"
Wynter's gaze turned intense. "It's very obvious that the people who stole the Drakevein Pendant are very smart. There's no way they're stupid enough to walk out the front door after a successful theft."
Then, Wynter suddenly bent down and picked up a piece of metal foil that had been almost invisible. "This is a nanoscale signal jammer that specifically targets motion sensors. It isn't something ordinary thieves can get their hands on."
Sherman looked over, his expression as dark as before. "It looks like these people have been planning this for a long time just to steal the Drakevein Pendant."
Wynter nodded slightly. "This matter is not as simple as it seems. Keep the museum open as usual for the next few days so as not to raise suspicion. Otherwise, all of you will be implicated as well.
"If anyone asks about the Drakevein Pendant, tell them that the cultural relic needs to be protected and thus won't be exhibited for a few days."
Sherman frowned. "Okay, but what should we do after a few days have passed?"
"I'll get the cultural relic back," Wynter replied, putting the metal foil away. "You're up, Wolf."
Wolf nodded and sat in front of the computer, tapping away at the keyboard without pause.
Seeing this, Sherman asked, "This kid—"
"Please trust in the Cultural Heritage Center," Wynter said calmly. "This kid is a hacking genius whose skill only surpasses that of the hacker who invaded your systems."
Wolf turned his head and said, "This hacker possesses decent skills, Boss. It'll take some time to restore the surveillance footage."
Wynter's gaze grew more intent. "It's fine so long as you can restore it."
She then walked out of the room, but Sherman was still worried. "But if we don't report this matter to our superiors in time, the consequences will be especially serious."
Wynter turned slightly toward him. "I know, but if you report it now, the consequences will be the same. I'm helping you here. This is no ordinary theft of a cultural relic. The culprits are professionals and very likely to have foreign countries' support."
As she finished speaking, she suddenly turned to look at a ventilation duct and said, "This is…"
