The Heiress’ Return: Six Brothers at Her Beck and Call (Wynter Quinnell) novel Chapter 2031

Hyrum forced himself to stay calm. "My records have already been verified by my superiors. Do you think you can cast doubt on me with just a few words?"

Wynter's gaze was clear. "You're really stubborn, but I have some bad news for you. Your superiors already know about this and have sent people to recheck. I'm sure there's a new result by now."

At that, Hyrum's expression completely darkened. He suddenly drew a handgun from his waist and pointed it straight at Wynter. "Did you arrange this setup? How clever of you to have successfully trapped me."

Wynter stood there with no sign of panic despite the gun aimed at her. "Although I haven't dealt with many foreign dignitaries, I do know the basics. You may have used methods to alter your face and restore your figure, but a fake is still a fake."

Hyrum laughed heartily before finally showing his true colors. "I never thought I'd be fooled by a woman. But what can you do about it? There are so many of us here. We can kill you all before getting out of here."

Wynter's gaze turned cold. "You can try."

Hyrum's expression sharpened as he leveled the gun at Wynter's brow. "How dare you speak to me like that, despite being my prisoner? It may be difficult for me to kill someone as the police chief, but I can act without restraint once I strip the disguises."

Wynter glanced at the other officers. "These people are probably all your cronies who came in through the back door, right?"

Hyrum glanced at the officers beside him, as if admiring his handiwork. "That's right—they're all mine. As for those who didn't obey, the grass on their graves is already a few inches high."

Wynter's gaze remained calm as she spoke slowly. "You… Ideals are beautiful, but reality is cruel. You don't have many years left to live. Did you know that?"

"So what? You'll die along with me." Hyrum sneered. "Though my country wouldn't dare to clash with Cascadia directly, I can be the fuse. That will keep Cascadia from acting rashly, and my country won't move against me."

Wynter half-leaned against the wall, knees slightly bent. "Confidence is good, but don't be arrogant."

"I'm not afraid of Cascadia. I only want fewer complications." Hyrum looked triumphant. "But you've thoroughly angered me. I'll show you who calls the shots on this land. Or maybe I'll spare you if you choose to tell me what I want to know."

Wynter gave a faint smile. "Are you that confident you'd win?"

Without another word, Hyrum ordered the officers to train their guns on Wynter's group.

Then, he turned to Frankie and Kenith, fury in his voice. "You idiots! Didn't I warn you that Cascadia had people here? You were supposed to be careful. And look what happened! You've been wiped out!"

Kenith lowered his head. "I tried my best, Max. We didn't suspect much then. We just saw someone passing by and decided to trick them in. Who could've known…"

Frankie froze. "Max? You're Max? Our oldest brother?"

Hyrum's gaze softened slightly. "Yes, Frankie. It's me."

Frankie's face was filled with disbelief. "No way! Kenith told me you were dead, and that he would be the oldest brother from then on. You don't look like Max."

Hyrum stepped closer. "Frankie, this is not something I can explain clearly in just a few words. But rest assured, I am still alive. It's just that I couldn't acknowledge the two of you because of my position."

At that, the three brothers embraced tightly.

A moment later, Hyrum finally let go. "This isn't the time for a reunion. We need to get out of here quickly."

He then turned to the officers nearby. "Tie them all up and take them with us. They'll be our hostages. Do your best not to harm them."

As soon as the words left his mouth, a sudden commotion came from the entrance. Hyrum spun around and saw all the officers by the door lying on the ground.

Realizing something was wrong, Hyrum quickly signaled for the main doors to be shut. "Stay on guard!"

A voice called out from the doorway through a loudspeaker. "Hyrum, the higher-ups have already re-verified your identity and found issues with it. You need to come back with us for the investigation."

Hyrum's eyes narrowed. "Bullshit! I'd meet my end if I went back with you. You'd better let me leave safely, or the Cascadian envoy will die with me! We'll see how you can explain yourselves to Cascadia's wrath then!"

At those words, the people at the entrance didn't force their way in. Instead, they hurriedly pulled out their phones to contact their higher-ups.

Wynter tilted her head slightly as she ordered softly, "Now."

With that, Wolf shot forward at lightning speed.

Most of the people's attention was fixed on the commotion outside the door. By the time someone reacted, Wolf had already taken down three or four men. "There's—"

Before he could even finish, Wolf had him pinned under his foot.

Hyrum quickly spun around, raising his handgun to fire at Wolf. However, before he could pull the trigger, a sharp pain struck his wrist, and the gun slipped from his hand.

Startled, he looked down to see a silver needle stuck deep in his wrist.

"Who was it?" Hyrum roared in fury, raising his head only to see Wynter smiling faintly. "You! It was you! Kenith, Frankie, shoot her dead!"

Kenith and Frankie didn't hesitate to whip their guns out and aim at Wynter. However, Wolf was faster. With a single punch each, he sent them flying backward.

Within moments, every officer in the courtyard was flattened by Wolf, their weapons confiscated and tossed into a pile.

Clenching his teeth against the pain, Hyrum tried to pull out the silver needle.

Wynter strolled over unhurriedly, her voice soft but cutting. "I'd advise you not to pull it out. Otherwise, you'll die much faster."

Hyrum was utterly shaken. "You… You're not human! I had so many officers and weapons, yet none of them worked against a child…"

Wynter pressed her foot against him. "The thing I hate most is someone pointing a gun at my head. You're the first and will be the last."

Pinned to the ground, Hyrum was wracked with the searing pain of the silver needle and the crushing weight of Wynter's foot.

All around the courtyard, his men writhed helplessly on the ground.

Seeing this, Hyrum knew he had lost the battle. He closed his eyes, and just as he was about to bite down on the poison capsule hidden in his teeth, Wynter seized his jaw in a steel grip.

She deftly squeezed the capsule out. "Those little suicide tricks won't work on me. Now, tell me—what's your real name?"

Hyrum's eyes went hollow with despair. "Maxie Elroy."

Wynter bent her knee slightly, her gaze razor-sharp. "Who told you to impersonate Hyrum? I'm guessing the one who instructed you is no ordinary person."

Maxie shook his head. "No one. I discovered it myself. I was by the river one day and saw a body drifting downstream. I pulled him ashore, only to find he was already dead. He had an identification card on him.

"After thinking it through, I found a face forger to alter my looks and took on Hyrum's identity. From that day onward, I rose through the ranks step by step and eventually grew fond of life with power."

Just then, someone walked in through the doorway and looked toward Wynter. "Good evening, Ms. Quinnell. Our higher-ups sent me to ensure your safety. You haven't been harmed, have you?"

Wynter turned slightly to glance at him. "No. Everyone in the courtyard has already been dealt with."
