Whitney threw herself into work like a sedative, trying to numb the grief of living without Henderick. This meant that she hadn’t been there for Jeremy the way she should have been.

Thank God he turned out steady anyway. If he’d gone off the rails, she didn’t know what she would’ve done.

Now, getting to help him with something this big filled Whitney with a mix of relief and excitement. It felt like making up for what she’d missed, and watching Jeremy finally reach a kind of happiness she’d always wanted for him.

Smiling, she held Amelia’s hand and asked gently, “So, Amelia, when do you have time? I’d like to visit your Grandma and Aunt Thea and talk through the details with them.”

Whitney knew that Amelia didn’t have the best relationship with Emery, Emery. She was considerate enough not to bring that up. If Amelia didn’t want Emery involved, going through Ursula and Thea was the best option.

Those two were close to Amelia. They genuinely cared about her. Whitney knew that much.

A marriage wasn’t something you rushed through carelessly. There were customs and expectations to consider, as well as the bride’s family’s wishes. All of it needed to be handled properly.

Amelia’s chest warmed. She could hear the sincerity in Whitney’s voice and tell that she’d carefully thought this through for her. The tightness in her shoulders eased.

“Whitney, that’s very kind of you. I should ask my grandmother and Aunt Thea first to see what works for them.”

Whitney was sharp. After one look at Amelia’s shy expression-and at Jeremy, who was sitting there as if his soul had wandered off in Amelia’s direction-she understood everything.

She patted Amelia’s hand, her smile growing softer. “Marriage isn’t just about two people. It’s about two families. The proper steps matter. It’s about showing you respect, and it’s about our sincerity as Currans.

“Don’t worry. I won’t let you be slighted. Talk to your grandmother and Aunt Thea and see when they’re free. We’ll set a time for both families to have dinner together.”

It landed right where it needed to. Amelia felt seen, protected, and strangely at ease.

“Okay,” she said sweetly. “Thank you, Whitney.”

The rare softness on Amelia’s face nearly stunned Jeremy. He looked like he couldn’t believe his

He jumped in at the right moment. “Mom, Amelia’s shy. Please handle the details. I’ll clear my schedule, too. I’ll go with you to visit Ursula and Aunt Thea.”

Then, he turned to Amelia, his gaze warm and steady. “You focus on what you need to do. Mom and I will take care of the rest.”

He knew she had a lot on her plate, the formulas and the situation with Regina. If he could carry the other load, he would.

Whitney shot him a look that said, “Not even married yet, and you’re already this protective,” but her smile gave her away.

Yes, Jeremy was growing up. Yes, he was going to be part of someone else’s life now.

But Whitney had always been the type to take things as they came. Honestly, the thought of being a carefree old lady someday didn’t sound bad at all.

“Alright,” she said, standing up. “You two talk. I’m not going to sit here and be a third wheel.” She turned to Amelia, still smiling. “Amelia, tell your Grandma and Aunt Thea soon, okay? Once you’ve picked a time, let me know.”

“I will,” Amelia promised quickly. “I will, Whitney.”

After Whitney left, an oddly charged quiet fell over the living room.

Jeremy crossed the room in a few steps and took Amelia’s hand. The warmth of his fingers threaded into hers, and the simple contact softened them both.

“So,” he asked, sounding pleased with himself, “my mom’s pretty great, right?”

He could already picture Amelia and his mother getting along with no tension or battles. The thought made him feel safe in a way he rarely admitted.

Amelia shot him a look that was half scolding and half smiling. Her happiness was written all over her face. “Yes, your mom is wonderful.” Then her voice dipped, almost uncertain. “Jeremy, are we really getting engaged?”

Everything had happened so fast that it still felt unreal.

“Of course we are.” Jeremy tightened his grip, his eyes steady and serious. “Amelia, I’m not letting you get away.”

His conviction left no room for doubt. It was as if he were saying it to the world as much as to her.
