Chapter 309
~MARCO~
Iad stood in Caterina’s living room and let the question stay between us without an answer.
Do you love her?
I had changed the subject. I had apologized. I had left. An hour in the car with the engine off had not given me an answer to her question. The silence had only made the question louder.
Now Loretta was standing close enough that I could see the pulse jumping at the base of her throat. The same question was still repeating in my head while she waited for an answer I did not have.
I wasn’t sure what she was really asking. My intentions with her? Whether the contract still meant anything? Whether was already deciding to end it?
She was close enough that clear thinking felt impossible. Her scent was right there, warm and familiar and sharper than it had any right to be after the day I’d had.
Every reason I had given myself for keeping distance started to thin.
“Now that she’s back,” Loretta said. Her voice was soft. She swallowed. “Is it that you do not need me anymore?”
She took another step closer. My hands curled at my sides.
“I’m asking if you’re going back to her,” she added. “I’m asking if this is the part where you tell me the contract was useful for a while, but you’ve realized you still want the woman you should have fought for. I’m asking if I should start packing.”
My eyes widened. “No. That’s not-no.”
The words rushed out of me.
“Then what?” I heard the crack in her voice and felt my body instantly respond. “Why am I still here?”
The thought of letting her out of the contract early because Caterina had reappeared did not sit anywhere near right.
I could picture it for half a second-the papers, the quiet exit, the families relieved-and the picture made my chest tighten. I could not do it.
“I need you.” The words came out low and certain.
I meant them more than I should have. So fucking much more than the arrangement required. I didn’t say the rest. I didn’t tell her that the need had stopped being about the contract days ago. I didn’t tell her that wanting her felt reckless when both families would rather lose us than watch it become more.
Her gaze changed. Something eased. Relief, maybe.
Then she moved.
Her arms came up and around my neck. Her chest pressed against mine. Her mouth found mine before I had time to decide whether I was going to stop her.
The kiss was sudden and warm and completely unexpected.
My hands stayed at my sides for one stunned second.
What the fuck?
Was she kissing me again or was this a dream?
My brain caught up a moment later. I felt the softness of her lips, the way her body leaned into mine, the small sound she made when I did not pull away.
She was kissing me. Really kissing me. Not for a camera. Not because someone was watching.
Before I knew it, I was kissing her back.
My hands found her waist. I pulled her closer without thinking, and she made another small sound against my mouth-soft, pleased, almost relieved,
The confusion about Caterina was still there. The guilt was still there. None of it stopped the way my body answered hers.
I deepened the kiss. She opened for me immediately, and the taste of her hit me hard.
My hands slid lower, over the curve of her hips, then back up, gripping tighter. She pressed closer. Her fingers slid into my
hair.
She broke the kiss just long enough to breathe, then found my mouth again. This time it was slower. Deeper.

Her body rubbed against mine and my hands moved without permission-one sliding up her back, the other settling at the small of it, holding her where I could feel every small shift of her hips.
“Marco,” she whispered against my mouth.
ssed the corner of her lips, then her jaw, then the spot just beneath her ear.
She shivered. Her hands tightened in my hair. I felt the hitch in her breath when my mouth moved lower, over the pulse!
had been staring at minutes ago.
She tipped her head to give me more room and the sound she made when my teeth grazed her skin went straigh through
My hand slid under oversized shirt. Warm skin. The dip of her waist. She arched into the touch and I swore under m breath against her throat.
My other hand stayed on her hip, fingers pressing in as she shifted against me again, closer, seeking friction. I gave it to her without thinking. Her soft moan vibrated against my mouth when I found it again.
I kissed her harder. She answered just as hard, hands sliding down my chest, then around to my back, pulling me in until there was no space left between us.
My hand moved higher, palm flat against her ribs, thumb brushing the underside of her breast. She gasped into my mouth and I felt her whole body tighten, then melt.
“Fuck,” I breathed.
She kissed me again before I could say anything else. Her leg shifted between mine. I groaned. My hand left her hip long enough to grip the back of her thigh and pull her closer, higher, until she was pressed against me in a way that made both of us stop breathing for a second.
She moved her hips. I met her. The sound she made this time was louder, less controlled.
I wanted her on the nearest surface. I wanted the clothes gone. I wanted-
A crash came from the kitchen.
