“I should go to bed,” she said quickly. “Before I do something else stupid. I’m sorry. Really. I didn’t mean to put you in that position. I just…I drank more than I thought. At dinner. With the wine. I’m sorry. I drank for the both of us since you weren’t there. And clearly it’s messing with me-”
I’d never seen her this talkative. The words kept tumbling out like she was trying to talk herself back from the edge she’d already stepped over.
Her voice was soft and a little slurred, but not enough to hide the panic underneath. If the taste of her wasn’t still on my mouth, if my blood wasn’t still running hot and heavy from the way she’d kissed me, I might have found it amusing.
She took another step. Her knee gave. I moved before she could fall, one hand at her waist, the other braced under her elbow.
I felt her breath against my neck when she didn’t pull away.
“Careful.”
“I’m fine,” she said, but her weight settled into me. One hand found the front of my shirt and stayed there, fingers curled like she needed the grip to stay upright. “I’m just…dizzy. I’ll be fine in the morning.”
I looked past her toward the kitchen. Nothing moved. The house was still. All I could hear was the uneven rhythm of her breathing and the sound of my own pulse.
When I looked back, her eyes were on the floor.
Color still stayed high on her cheeks. Her mouth was parted. She was gripping my shirt like it was the only thing left in the room, and I was standing there trying not to remember the sound she’d made when my mouth had been on her body. Trying not to feel how perfectly she fit against me even like this.
“You’re not fine,” I said.
“I am. I’m just drunk. People get drunk. It’s fine.”
I didn’t argue. Arguing would have meant standing here longer with her pressed to me, her fingers flexing against my chest every time she shifted her weight.
Instead I bent, slid one arm under her knees and the other around her back, and lifted. She made a small, startled sound but didn’t fight me.
Her arms went around my neck on instinct. Her head dropped to my shoulder. The movement put her mouth near my jaw. I felt the warm brush of her breath and had to lock every muscle in my body to keep walking.
“Marco-”
“If you’re drunk,” I said, already moving down the hall, “you’re sleeping in my bed.”
She went still against me. The weight of her settled more fully into my arms. Too perfect. Her hair fell against my neck when she turned her face into my shoulder, and I felt the exact moment she stopped pretending she could stand and simply let me carry her.
“I can sleep in mine,” she said, quieter now. “I’m not that bad. I can walk.”
“You can barely stand.”
“That’s not-”
“You’re in my house. You’re drunk. You’re sleeping where I can hear you if you get up and fall again.” I adjusted my grip when she shifted, one hand sliding higher under her knees so I wouldn’t drop her. The movement pulled her closer. Her thigh pressed against my forearm. I kept my eyes on the end of the hall and tried not to think about every place we touched. “That’s not up for a discussion.”
She didn’t answer. Her fingers stayed curled at the back of my neck. Not gripping. Just there.

I carried her the rest of the way without speaking. Every step felt longer than it should have. By the time I reached the bedroom, my jaw was tight.
I set her on the edge of the bed. She stayed where I put her, hands in her lap, eyes down.
“Lie down,” I said.
She did. Slowly. She turned onto her side facing the wall, knees drawn up, one hand tucked under the pillow.
I pulled the blanket up over her shoulders and tucked it in along her back. My hand lingered at the curve of her shoulder longer than it should have.
I felt the rise and fall of her breathing under my palm and had to make myself let go.
