Marco had left less than an hour ago. He had looked at the floor more than he’d looked at me. I had liked that. Seeing him feel so guilty after treating me poorly.

He’d also refused to answer my question on whether or not he was in love with his wife.

I sat on the edge of the bed, phone already in my hand, and dialed the number his mother had given me weeks ago. She answered on the second ring.

“Well?”

I hadn’t expected her to stay up. She had made it clear she wanted me to call the moment he left, but I had assumed she would be asleep this late at night.

“It’s working,” I said. “He believed every word. He stood in my living room and apologized like he had ruined my life. He could barely look at me when he left. Give it a little more time and he won’t be thinking about the Bellandi girl at all.”

There was a short pause. I heard the faint clink of something being set down-a glass, maybe.

“You’re certain?”

“I watched his face.” I traced a finger along the seam of the blanket. “He looked sick with guilt. He kept saying he should have known better, that he never meant for any of it to hurt me. He thought I didn’t care. He didn’t argue or question it once.”

“I was worried after that video surfaced.” She admitted. “I had to do something that I knew would work.”

I smiled faintly. The video had been inconvenient. Marco refusing to let his family tear her apart by telling the world she was his wife. But it did not tie him to her forever.

“He won’t keep looking at her that way,” I said. “Not once he starts remembering what it felt like before she existed. You were right. The guilt works better than anything else we tried. He spent years hating me. He won’t risk doing that to me a second time. Not while he still thinks he owes me something. Loretta doesn’t have that.”

His mother exhaled, the sound close to satisfaction. “Good. I was beginning to worry we had lost him. I will not watch my son stay married to a Bellandi. That family has been insulting ours for years. And that girl-” Her voice tightened. “She has no business in this family. She has no business giving me grandchildren that carry her blood. I want her gone before either of them gets the idea that this marriage is permanent.”

I leaned back against the headboard.

I understood the desperation better than I let on. I had my own version of it. Years ago I had walked away from Marco when he was nothing.

I had thought I had time until I wanted him again.

Then he got better. Then he became famous. I started seeing him everywhere and realized just how

successful he’d become. I knew I’d been foolish to let him go. But the harder I tried to get him back, the more he did everything he could to ignore me.

I wasn’t going to make that mistake twice.

“He invited me to his doctor’s appointment tomorrow,” I said.

In truth I had invited myself. I had mentioned the appointment while he was still standing there, heavy with guilt, and he hadn’t found an easy way to say no.

He had nodded once, almost absently, and the plan had settled into place.

“They’re going to tell him whether he can return to racing sooner than expected,” I continued. “I’ll be in the room when they do. After that it gets easier. He’ll start calling. He’ll start explaining himself when he doesn’t want to explain them to her. The wife becomes at incolivenience instead of a priority.”

“And if he resists?” His mother’s voice had dropped. “If the guilt isn’t enough? If he goes home and she touches him and he forgets what he said to you?”

I was quiet for a moment. I considered the question carefully. I had already thought about it.

Marco was not that soft anymore. He was not easily moved. I was the reason for that. I was sure he did not actually love Loretta. He couldn’t even admit it to me.

“Then we make the guilt bigger,” I said. “We make sure the families keep talking. The more noise there is about the marriage being a mistake, the less he has to explain when he starts pulling away from her. I’ll handle the appointments. I’ll handle the late night calls when he can’t sleep. If he tries to put distance between us, I’ll remind him-gently-what it looked like the last time he decided I didn’t matter. He won’t want that again. Not while he still thinks he’s the one who walked away first when I needed him the most.”

There was a longer pause this time. When his mother spoke again, I could hear the happiness in her tone.

“Do whatever you need to do. I don’t care how it looks. I don’t care what people say about me. I will not have that girl in my house at Christmas. I will not have her name on anything that belongs to my son. If the guilt isn’ t enough, find something else. Find something he can’t walk away from without looking cruel. Make him choose.”

“I will.”

“Keep me updated after the appointment.”
