We’d just arrived in Japan. The ride from the airport had been quiet. Marco sat in the front with the driver. Caterina and I were in the back, the space between us narrow enough that her perfume kept drifting over every time she shifted.
She hadn’t tried to talk to me. She hadn’t needed to. Every few minutes her phone lit up, and I watched her thumbs move, then watched her glance toward the front seat like she was checking whether Marco had
noticed.
He hadn’t.
Who was she talking to that often?
When the car finally stopped under the hotel canopy, I breathed a sigh of relief. I couldn’t wait to put distance between us.
I stepped out first. Luca and Charlotte were already waiting near the entrance, bags at their feet.
The second Charlotte’s eyes landed on Caterina, her face changed. The polite smile she’d had ready for us dropped. She didn’t bother hiding it.
“Hey,” I said, lifting a hand.
Charlotte didn’t answer. She crossed the short distance, caught my wrist like didn’t want an audience, and pulled me toward the side of the reception desk before Marco could finish greeting Luca. The grip was firm. Not painful, but not gentle either.
“What the hell is she doing here?” Charlotte asked, low and sharp. She didn’t look at me when she said it. She was watching Caterina over my shoulder.
“A lot’s happened since Marco released the video calling me his wife,” I said. I kept my own voice down. * Marco’s mother showed up at his house. She told him she paid for Caterina’s mother’s treatment years ago. The deal was Caterina had to end things with him and stay away. His mother claimed that Caterina never cheated and only left him because of her involvement.”
Charlotte’s mouth tightened. “And you believed that?”
“I don’t know what I believe.” I glanced past her. Marco was still talking to Luca near the elevators.
Caterina stood close enough that their arms brushed when she turned. She laughed at something, and Marco didn’t laugh back, but he didn’t step away either.
The sight made me sick. “He went to see her. She asked to come to the doctor’s appointment. He said yes. Then she invited herself on this trip. He didn’t tell her no.”
Charlotte’s eyes cut back to me. “His mother has been trying to get rid of you since the day you showed up. Luca said she’s been calling him too, fishing for information. This is convenient. Suddenly there’s a sick mother, secret payments, sudden guilt, and now Caterina is standing in a hotel lobby in Japan with your husband. They planned it. Both of them.”
“It doesn’t matter if they planned it.” I told her. “The contract ends in a year. He’s allowed to see whoever he wants after that. I’m not supposed to care who stands next to him at a doctor’s appointment or who watches him during his races.”
“You’re doing a terrible job of not caring.”
She didn’t hide how she felt about this entire thing. She folded her arms and stayed exactly where she was, blocking the view of the lobby just enough that I had to lean to see past her. “I’ve watched you around him for weeks. You look for him when he’s not there. You noticed every time she touched him back at the beach. Stop pretending this is only about the contract. You need to accept what you actually feel before that lying bitch decides she still has a claim on him.”
Heat climbed the back of my neck. I wanted to tell her she was wrong. I wanted to say the jealousy was only

because the arrangement was supposed to look real and Caterina was making that harder.
But Charlotte was still watching me, and she didn’t look like she would accept that lie.
Across the lobby, Caterina said something else. Marco nodded. He still hadn’t moved away. I watched the space between them and felt the same tight, useless anger I’d felt in the car every time she openly flirted with
him.
It wasn’t just that she was here. It was that she looked comfortable. Like she had already decided the last few years didn’t count and the apology he’d given her was enough to erase the rest.
“She’s been with him for hours,” I said, quieter. “On the plane. In the car. At the appointment. He apologized to her and then he just…let her stay close. I kept waiting for him to step back. He didn’t.”
