Elena’s hand was shaking so badly that the coffee inside her mug was spilling over the rim, dripping onto the floor. She couldn’t even look me in the eye.

AriaIElena stammered, her voice dropping into a scared whisper.

Answer me, Elena!I yelled, the anger finally bursting out of me. Did you give him my address? Did you sell me out to him?

Elena burst into tears, letting out a loud, ugly sob. She set the mug down on the table with a loud clatter and covered her face.

I am so sorry, Aria! Please, you have to understand. I didn’t want to do it, I swear! But I was in so much trouble. I am drowning in deep financial debt, and the bank was going to take everything I own. Luca contacted me out of nowhere. He promised to pay off my entire debt if I just found out where you were staying and moved in to confirm it.

I stared at her, feeling a sick wave of pure betrayal crash over my chest. This was the girl I had shared my deepest secrets with. The friend I had opened my door to when I was already terrified for my own life.

She knew I was hiding. She knew I was trying to protect my baby. And she had turned my hiding place into a business deal.

It finally made sense. She never needed a place to stay because of a new job. She was working with Luca from the very beginning. She was a spy in my own home.

Get out,I said, my voice dropping into a cold, dangerous whisper.

Aria, please listen to my explanation!Elena begged, reaching out to grab my arm. I was desperate! He told me he just wanted to talk to you and apologize! He said he wanted to make things right!

I said get out!I screamed, ripping my arm away from her touch. I marched over to the front door and threw it wide open. Both of you. Get out of my apartment right now!

Elena sobbed harder, realizing there was no saving this friendship. She ran toward the guest room, grabbed her bags, and dragged them toward the door without looking back.

Luca tried to step closer to me, his hands raised. Aria, don’t be like this. I only did it because I was desperate to see you

If you ever show up at my building again, Luca, I will sue you for stalking me,I snapped, pointing a shaking finger directly at his face. I will call the police, and I will make sure you spend time behind bars. Do not test

  1. me. Get out!

Leo and the other guard stepped into the doorway, their massive frames completely blocking the light from the hall. They glared down at Luca, their expressions deadly serious.

Realizing he was completely outnumbered and out of options, Luca let out a frustrated hiss and walked out, with Elena trailing miserably behind him.

I slammed the door shut, turned the lock, and leaned my back against the wood. My whole body was shaking uncontrollably. I slid down to the floor, pulling my knees to my chest.

First Julian, then the acting CEO, and now Elena and Luca. It felt like my entire world was made of lies.

Ten minutes passed in a blurry, painful fog. I was just about to go into the bedroom to check on Amelia when a loud commotion echoed from the street outside my window.

I hurried over to the glass, pulling the curtain back slightly to look down at the driveway.

A sleek black car had just pulled up, screeching to a halt right behind Luca’s vehicle. The door flew open, and Brandon stepped out. He didn’t even bother to close his car door.

He looked completely frantic, his dark coat flying open as he hurried toward the entrance of the building. Apparently, his men had called him the moment Luca started causing trouble in the hallway, and he had raced down as fast as he could.

I didn’t want to stay locked in the room anymore. I needed air. I unlocked the door and walked out into the cold morning air, stepping onto the front steps of the building just as Brandon reached the walkway.

The moment Brandon saw me, his intense eyes softened with immediate worry. He took two large strides and closed the distance between us, his hands instantly reaching out to grip my shoulders.

Aria,he breathed, his chest heaving as he scanned my face. Are you hurt? Did he touch you? My men told me he forced his way inside.

Looking at Brandon, the only person who hadn’t abandoned me or sold me out in the last few days, all my tough defenses completely crumbled.

I let out a shaky breath and leaned my forehead against his solid chest, absorbing his warmth. I’m okay. He didn’t hurt me. I threw them both out.

Just then, a harsh, mocking voice cut through the air. Oh, look at this. The big, powerful savior arrives,Luca sneered. He had stopped near his car, watching us with pure disdain in his eyes.

He walked back toward the steps, a bitter, ugly smile on his face. You’re only playing the hero because you’re desperate to get into her pants, aren’t you, Brandon? She’s vulnerable, so you’re putting on this big, protective act to look good.

Brandon’s entire body went rigid against mine. His jaw clenched so hard the muscles jumped, and his eyes turned into chips of ice. He didn’t even look at Luca.

He kept his arm securely wrapped around my waist, trying to turn me back toward the building.

Come on, Aria,Brandon said, his voice low and tight as he controlled his temper. Let’s go back inside. He is not worth your time.

No,I said, pulling back slightly. I stopped on the steps, my eyes narrowing as I looked at Luca. Wait. I want
