When I opened the front door, Brandon was standing right there in the doorpost. He looked incredibly sharp. almost intimidating, in a dark charcoal threepiece suit.

His face was lined with deep tension, and his shoulders were rigid. He didn’t say a word about our last explosive fight. He didn’t ask for forgiveness for keeping his family a secret, and he didn’t make any excuses.

Instead, he just looked at me with a steady, unwavering look of pure emotional support. In his eyes, I didn’t see judgment or pity; I just saw a man who was ready to act as my shield, just like he had promised.

Are you ready?he asked softly, his deep voice washing over me.

I swallowed the lump in my throat and gave a single, firm nod. Let’s go.

The ride to the high court was completely silent. The only sound was the low hum of the car’s engine and the distant wipers clearing the falling snow from the windshield.

I sat in the backseat, staring blankly out at the snowy streets, but as the massive, imposing stone pillars of the courthouse came into view, the sheer weight of the day finally crashed over me.

My chest tightened so hard I could barely draw breath. Without even realizing it, tears began to pour silently down my face, pooling behind my dark shades.

Brandon noticed immediately. He didn’t try to lecture me, he didn’t tell me to be strong, and he didn’t offer empty words of comfort.

Instead, he reached over, gently took a crying Amelia from my shaking arms, and cradled her expertly against his broad chest.

He rocked her softly, using his large hand to support her head, giving me the space to just breathe, cry, and collect my shattered nerves without worrying about dropping my daughter.

As the car pulled up to the private, secure rear entrance of the courthouse, Brandon turned his head to look at me. His intense eyes were incredibly heavy, filled with a shadow I hadn’t seen before.

Aria, listen to me closely,he said, his voice dropping into a serious, urgent whisper. You are going to discover something in that room today. Something about the past, and about how all of this began. But no matter how bad it is, and no matter how shocking it feels, I need you to stay strong. Do it for yourself, and do it for Amelia. Can you do that for me?

I frowned, my mind suddenly spinning with a new wave of confusion. What do you mean? What am I going to find out, Brandon? What aren’t you telling me?

I tried to pry further, desperate for any clue to brace myself, but his face hardened into a mask. He just his head and looked away, staring out the tinted window. He didn’t give me any more clues.

The driver came around and opened the doors, letting in a blast of freezing winter air.

We placed Amelia safely into her padded baby carrier, securing the cover to keep her warm, and leading the way like a tank, we walked through the secure back hallways and stepped directly into highceilinged courtroom.

The moment I walked inside, the air felt thick, heavy, and completely suffocating. I took off my sunglasses, and my eyes immediately scanned the rows of benches.

My stomach dropped into a bottomless pit.

Sitting across the aisle at the defense table, looking completely calm, smug, and untouchable, was my uncle, the man who had shamelessly stepped into my late father’s shoes and stolen his life’s work while I lay in a

coma.

But he wasn’t alone. Sitting right beside him was Luca’s father, looking arrogant and wealthy, adjusting his expensive gold watch. And next to him was Julian’s father, his cold, cruel eyes staring straight ahead like he owned the entire judicial system.

I became incredibly nervous. My hands started to sweat, my knees felt weak, and my heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.

These were three of the most powerful, dangerous, and ruthless men in the corporate world, and I was just a young girl trying to win a war against them with a stack of papers and a broken heart.

We took our seats at the plaintiff’s table. Brandon sat right next to me, his massive presence and steady breathing the only thing keeping me from running out of the room.
