The drive back to my house was very, very quiet. It was a heavy kind of silence that made it hard for me to breathe. Brandon did not say a single word to me during the whole trip.
His hands were gripped tight on the steering wheel, and he kept his eyes on the road in front of him. He did not even look at me once, not even for a second
I knew he was angry. He was more than angry; he was deeply hurt. Just a little while ago, he had told me how much he loved me. He had opened his heart and told me he wanted us to be a real family.
And then, right after that beautiful moment, the ghost of my past came back to ruin everything. Julian, the man who left me when I was pregnant and alone, was finally here.
He was a real danger to our peace and our happiness.
Brandon was very territorial when it came to Amelia. He had a right to be. He was the one who was there for her first steps. He was the one who stayed up all night when she had a fever.
He had raised her as his own daughter since she was a tiny baby. Now, with Julian back, Brandon felt like his family was being threatened by a stranger.
I wanted to say something to make him feel better, but the words were stuck in my throat. I didn’t know how to fix this mess.
When we finally got to my apartment, the silence stayed between us like a wall. Brandon got out of the car, walked us to the front door, and dropped us off. He didn’t even say hello or goodbye.
“Brandon, thank you. Thank you for everything you did today,” I called out to him as he turned away.
He did not turn around. He did not say a word. He just kept walking back to his car. His back looked stiff, and his shoulders were tight with stress. I let out a long, sad sigh as I watched his car drive away into the dark night.
My heart felt heavy like a lead weight. He had every right to be mad at me. I had not given him an answer about our relationship yet, and now Julian was back to cause trouble for all of us.
I turned to look at Amelia. She still looked so small and innocent. She was still holding that new doll Julian had bought for her at the hotel. My anger from the car was gone now, replaced by a deep sadness.
I knelt down on the floor and wiped the dry tear marks from her face. I pulled her into a very long hug and held her tight.
“I am so sorry, baby,” I whispered into her hair. “I am sorry I yelled at you in the car. I was just very, very scared that I might lose you.”
Amelia hugged me back with all her strength. “It’s okay, Mommy. I know why you were mad. I know I shouldn’t have gone with him. I promised I wouldn’t leave with people I don’t know, but…” she stopped and looked down at her shoes. “But that man… he looked just like me. I wanted to know why his face was the same

as mine. I was just so curious.”

I felt like my heart stopped beating in my chest. Even though she was only five years old, she had seen the truth with her own eyes. She saw the face I tried so hard to hide from her for years.
Amelia looked up at me. Her green eyes were very serious and full of big questions. “Mommy? Can I ask you something? Please don’t be mad at me for asking.”
“What is it, sweetie?” I asked. My voice was shaking, and I felt a chill run down my spine.
“Where is my daddy?” I froze. I felt like I could not move or speak. It felt like all the air in the room was suddenly gone.
“That man at the hotel… he told me he was my daddy,” Amelia said softly. She sounded like she was hoping it was true. “Is he really my daddy, Mommy? Is that who he is?”
I could not answer her right away. I did not want to lie to my child, but the truth was too big and too heavy for her to understand. I did not want Julian to be her father.
I did not want him to have that special name after what he did to us.
“I really need a daddy, Mommy,” Amelia said softly. She started to cry again, tiny sobs shaking her shoulders.
“My friend Sarah at school has a daddy who buys her big dolls and pretty dresses. Her daddy takes her to the park every single weekend to play. Everyone else at school has a daddy they talk about. Why don’t I know mine?”
“Amelia…” I started, but I didn’t know how to finish.
“Everyone knows that Uncle Brandon is not my real daddy,” she said. “He is my favorite uncle in the whole world, and I love him so much. But I want a daddy of my own. I want to be like everyone else in my class.”
I felt so much guilt in my heart that it made me feel sick. “Amelia, not every family looks the same. People have all kinds of families. Look at me… my daddy is dead. I grew up without him too, and I turned out okay.”
Amelia looked very sad to me. She reached out and touched my hand. “I’m sorry, Mommy. Is my daddy dead too? Is that why he wasn’t here?”
I sighed and closed my eyes. I felt so tired, like I had been running for days. “We will talk more about this when you are older and bigger, okay? Right now, it is very late. You need to take a warm bath, do your school work, and go to bed.”
Amelia was a very smart girl. She saw that I was sad and stressed, so she did not ask any more questions for now. She leaned in, kissed my cheek, and whispered, “I will wait until I am big for you to tell me the story.”
I smiled a sad smile and nodded. I helped her with her math homework and made her a simple dinner of mac and cheese. I tried to act like everything was fine, but my mind was full of worry.
Later, I tucked her into her bed and gave her a big kiss on the forehead. “Mommy?” Amelia said as her eyes were closing. “Even though I don’t know my daddy, I am happy I have you. And I am happy we have uncle Brandon to take care of us.”
