Chapter 98

ARIA’S POV

For a moment after he pulled away, I couldn’t breathe properly.

My lips still tingled, my chest rising too fast, my thoughts completely scattered. The room felt smaller somehow, like the walls had shifted closer without warning.

And then reality settled in. Slow. Awkward. Unforgiving. I looked down immediately, my fingers tightening slightly against the fabric of my dress as heat crept up my neck.

What did I just do? What did we just do? Neither of us spoke. Not at first. I could feel his presence still too close, too aware, and it only made everything worse.

Then he cleared his throat.

“We need to talk about the case.”

The words came out controlled. Too controlled. Like he had already decided to pretend none of that had just happened.

My chest tightened slightly at that. Of course.

Business. I swallowed and nodded. “Right… the case.”

I hated how my voice sounded. Soft. Unsteady.

He moved away then, creating space between us, and I didn’t know why that bothered me more than the silence.

“I got something,” he continued, his tone shifting fully now. He sounded focused and professional. “Information about the new head of your father’s company.”

That pulled me back immediately.

“What kind of information?” I asked, lifting my head.

His gaze met mine briefly before he looked away again. “His acquisition of the shares… it doesn’t make sense.”

My brows furrowed. “What do you mean?”

“I mean,” he exhaled slightly, “there are irregularities. Transactions that shouldn’t have gone through the way they did.”

My heart skipped. “Are you saying it’s illegal?”

“I’m saying it’s suspicious enough to investigate,” he replied.

Silence fell between us again, but this time it wasn’t awkward. It was heavy. “Aria,” he added, his voice quieter

now. “you might actually have a real case.”

Something inside me shifted at that. Hope. Sharp and sudden. Almost painful. “You’re serious?” I asked.

“I wouldn’t joke about this.”

My fingers curled slightly. “Then what do we do?”

“You meet my lawyer tomorrow,” he said. “He’ll walk you through everything.”

I nodded slowly, trying to steady myself. “Okay…”

“My driver will pick you up.” he added.

“You don’t have to-”

“I know.” he cut in calmly. “I want to.” That silenced me. For a second, I almost said something else.

Something about the kiss. But I didn’t.

Because he wasn’t looking at me like that anymore. “I should go,” he said instead.

I nodded again. “Okay.”

He hesitated. Just slightly. Then he turned and walked out. And just like that, it was over. The room felt too quiet after he left.

I lifted my hand slowly, brushing my lips without thinking. “…what was that?” I whispered to myself.

But no answer came. That night, I slept. Not perfectly. But better than I had in weeks. And somehow, that scared me.

The next morning, his car was already waiting. I paused when I saw it. Because it wasn’t just any car. It was his. The one he used the most.

Why would he send this? I shook the thought off and got in. “Good morning, ma’am,” the driver greeted.

“Good morning.” The ride was quiet, but my mind wasn’t. It kept replaying everything. His voice. His touch.

That kiss.

“Focus, Aria,” I muttered under my breath.

The driver glanced at me through the mirror. “Ma?”

“Nothing,” I said quickly. By the time we arrived, my nerves were already stretched thin. The lawyer’s office felt intimidating.

“Miss Aria,” the man greeted politely. “Please, have a seat.”

I nodded and sat down, my fingers already fidgeting.

“You said you had information?” I asked immediately.

“I do.” he replied, sliding a file toward me. “But I’ll need you to stay calm while we go through this.”

That didn’t sound good. “Just tell me.” I said.

He opened the file. “These documents show the transfer of shares,” he began. “But if you look closely…” He pointed at a section. “These clauses were altered.”

My brows pulled together. “Altered how?”

“In a way that benefits the buyer,” he said. “Unfairly.”

My stomach tightened. “So… it was manipulated?”

“Yes.”

The word felt heavy.

“And the person who acquired majority control…” he paused. Something about that pause made my chest tighten.

“Who is it?” I asked quietly. He slid another document toward me. I looked down. And everything inside me stopped. “No…”

My voice came out barely above a whisper. “That’s not possible…” But it was. The name was right there. Clear and undeniable.

“My father’s cousin?” I said, my voice shaking. “That doesn’t make sense… he hasn’t been involved in years…”

“He has,” the lawyer replied calmly. “Just not openly.”

My hands started to tremble. “You’re saying… he planned this?”

“Yes.”

“No…” I shook my head. “No, that’s-”

“And there’s more.”

My breath caught. “What more?” He hesitated again. And I hated that hesitation. “Say it,” I whispered.

“If this was planned long-term,” he said carefully, “then your parents’ deaths may not have been accidental.”

The room spun. “What?”

My voice broke completely. “That’s… that’s not true…”

But the doubt was already there. Sharp. Cold. Unavoidable. “You don’t know that,” I said quickly, almost desperately. “You can’t prove that-”
