Chapter 250
Aurora
The engine roared back to life.
The sound was too loud in the stillness, ripping through the quiet like we’d thrown a stone at a sleeping animal. The dashboard lit
up in a soft glow, warning lights blinking awake. For half a second, nothing happened outside.
Then Zayn moved.
“Now,” he said–sharp, final.
He didn’t ease into it. He slammed the car into reverse, tires spitting gravel as we lurched backward. My body jerked against the
seatbelt, heart slamming hard enough that I tasted metal. The trees blurred as he twisted the wheel, executing a tight, messy U–turn
on the narrow service road.
Branches scraped along the side of the car with a horrible screech.
And the moment we turned-
Headlights exploded on behind us.
“They’re moving,” I said, already knowing
“I see them,” Zayn replied, and then he floored it.
The car shot forward, engine screaming as we tore down the road. The service road rattled us like it was trying to shake the car
apart. Every pothole jolted through my spine. I grabbed the door handle, knuckles white, trying not to slam my teeth together.
I looked back.
“They’re right on us,” I said.
Zayn swore under his breath. “Of course they are.”
The hum under my skin came roaring back, louder now, like static under my bones. My eyes burned, that strange heat flaring again.
I didn’t need to look anymore–1 could feel where they were, how fast they were moving, how locked in they were on us.
We burst out of the service road and back onto the main road. Zayn didn’t slow down. He hit the turn hard, tires screaming as the car slid before snapping back into place.
My heart was in my throat. “Zayn-
“I’ve got it,” he said, jaw clenched. “I’ve got it.”
The road stretched ahead of us, empty and dark. No other cars. No lights, just us, the asphalt, and the headlights glued to our backs.

They stayed there.
Not backing off. Not trying to pass.
“They’re not trying to overtake us,” I said slowly.
Zayn’s expression darkened. “No. They’re playing with us.”
The car behind suddenly sped up.
My stomach dropped. “They’re coming up on the left.”
“I see them.”
The headlights shifted, the car pulling alongside us. I caught a glimpse of dark windows, the shape of the vehicle–but not the driver. They surged forward, engine roaring, cutting in front of us so close I gasped.
“They passed us,” I said, breathless.
For half a second, I thought maybe–maybe they were just going to keep going.
Then their brake lights exploded red.
“ZAYN-”
He slammed the brakes.
The car screeched, tires screaming as my body lurched forward against the seatbelt. Everything happened at once–the smell of burning rubber, the violent jolt, my heart slamming so hard it felt like it might crack my ribs.
We stopped just in time.
Their car sat dead still right in front of us, blocking the road completely.
The engine idled. The night closed in around us.
And we were trapped.
For what felt like way too long–probably only a couple of minutes–nothing happened.
No one moved.
Not us.
Not them.
Both cars just sat there, engines humming softly in the dark. My hands were clenched in my lap without me realizing it, my pulse thudding in my ears. The air inside the car felt heavy, like the night was pressing down on us.

Then the driver’s door of the car in front of us opened.
Slow. Unhurried.

A man stepped out, dressed all in black. He shut the door behind him and turned toward us like he had all the time in the world.
Zayn muttered under his breath, “Son of a bitch.”
I glanced at him, and my stomach sank. He knew this guy. I could te by the tight look on his face–no shock, no confusion. Just
recognition.
“Stay in the car,” he said suddenly.
Before I could say anything, he was already opening his door. Cold a rushed in as he stepped out and closed it behind him. I sat
there for half a second, staring at the empty seat next to me.
Then I sighed.
Yeah. No chance I was staying put.
I pushed my door open and got out too, the gravel crunching under my boots. The cold bit at my skin immediately. Zayn stiffened
the moment he realized I wasn’t in the car anymore.
He didn’t turn around right away.
“What do you want, Marcus?” he called out, his voice calm, even.
The man stopped a few feet in front of our car. He looked at Zayn first, slow and careful, then his gaze slid to me. He paused, like
he was taking me in.
“You’re not alone,” he said quietly.
Zayn’s shoulders went tight.
He finally turned and looked at me, eyes flashing with annoyance
“I told you to stay in the car,” Zayn whispered sharply, not even looking at me this time.
Then he turned back to the man.
“That’s none of your fucking business,” he said, his voice cold now.” asked you what do you want.”
Marcus didn’t react to the tone. If anything, he looked almost calm he straightened his jacket.
“I want you to come with me,” he said. “The king’s been looking for you.”
The words hit me immediately.

The king.
His father.
Zayn let out a short, humorless laugh. “Yeah,” he said, taking a step forward, “not a chance.”
Marcus didn’t move, but his eyes hardened.

“You don’t really have a choice.”
Zayn’s jaw tightened. “Leave, Marcus,” he warned. “Or we’re gonna have a problem.”
Marcus shook his head once. “I’m not leaving without you, Prince. I’ve got a direct order from your father. And when he finds out
you’re with someone else-”
He didn’t get to finish.
Zayn moved so fast I barely had time to register it. One second he was standing in front of me, tense but still, and the next he was on Marcus, fingers wrapped around his throat, lifting him clean off the ground.
Gravel scattered under Marcus’s boots as he kicked instinctively, hands clawing at Zayn’s wrist. Zayn’s expression was pure fury-
controlled, but barely. His arm was solid, unshaking, like Marcus weighed nothing at all.
“I said,” Zayn growled low, leaning in close, “leave.”
