The Human Among Wolves (Aurora) novel Chapter 346

Chapter 346

Couldn’t breathe right.

My vision blurred at the edges, black creeping in like the world was closing around me.

The only place-the only fucking place-I thought Aurora could possibly be…

was empty.

Stripped.

Silent.

Cleaned out like no one had ever existed here at all.

My chest tightened so violently it hurt. My breath came in short, broken bursts, the kind that tasted like metal in the back of my throat. For a

heartbeat, everything inside me froze,

-and then detonated.

I spun, grabbing the first thing my hand landed on. A small table, the kind with carved legs and a glossy top-one of the decorative pieces lining the hall like ornaments meant to distract from the ugliness beneath

My fingers curled around the edge, and without thinking, without caring, hurled it across the room.

It slammed into the wall with a crack that echoed through the empty hallway, splintering into pieces that scattered across the floor.

And I screamed.

Not a loud, theatrical sound-

but a raw, splintering sound dragged from somewhere deep, deeper than anger, deeper than fury. Something primal. Helpless. Terrified.

It ripped out of me before I could stop it.

Kael didn’t move. Didn’t flinch. He just stood a few feet behind me, silent, watching with an expression that wasn’t pity-because he knew better than to offer that-but something darker. Something that mirrored the panic clawing through my own ribcage.

I braced my hands on my knees, head hanging, breath shaking so hard it wouldn’t steady.

She’s gone.

She’s fucking gone.

And I have no idea where she is.

The realization punched through me again, hard enough to make my shoulders tremble.

The beast clawed frantically under my skin, pacing, snapping, trying to reach her-

but there was nothing.

No pull.

No thread.

Just a void.

A void where she should have been.

My fingers curled into fists on my thighs, nails biting deep enough to hurt!

“Aurora…”

Her name left me in a whisper, shredded and quiet, swallowed by the emptiness of the house.

“Where the fuck are you?”

The words scraped out of me, barely a whisper, raw and uneven. I wasn’t talking to Kael. I wasn’t talking to anyone. It was just the only thing

my mind could form while the rest of me reeled.

My voice sounded wrong in the empty space-too small, too wrecked.

“Zayn.”

Kael’s voice came from behind me, steady but low. I turned slowly, my muscles stiff, my pulse hammering so violently it felt like it shook the

air around me.

He stood a few steps away, his expression tight, unreadable-no arrogance, no challenge, none of the things I normally associated with him.

Just a deep, heavy seriousness.

“I think we both knew she wouldn’t be here,” he said, quieter now, like he didn’t want the empty house to hear us. “Your father already showed you this place once. He’s cruel, but he’s not an idiot. He wouldn’t hide her somewhere you know.”

The words hit me hard-not because he was wrong, but because he wasn’t

A cold, sinking realization settled in my stomach.

Of course she wouldn’t be here.

Of course he wouldn’t leave her somewhere I could predict, somewhere that tied back to anything I recognized. He’d learned long ago what I

noticed, what I questioned, what I paid attention to.

He knew me too fucking well.

Kael watched me carefully, cautiously, like he could see the pieces of my control slipping one by one.
