Chapter 404

Kael

:

The crack echoed sharply through the ruined penthouse.

Lazarus’s balance faltered for a fraction of a second, surprise flickering across his pale face before it disappeared just as quickly.

Then his leg drove into my ribs.

The impact was brutal.

Air exploded from my lungs as the blow sent me sliding across the marble floor, claws screeching against the polished surface as I tried to

slow myself.

Pain burned through my side like fire.

My body slammed into the shattered balcony doors and came to a halt in a scatter of broken glass. The jagged edges scraped against my

fur as I forced myself upright again, breath coming out in ragged bursts.

Freezing wind rushed through the broken window behind me, carrying swirls of snow into the apartment.

Across the room Lazarus rose slowly from where he had fallen.

Blood dripped steadily from the deep gashes across his chest, dark and thick as it slid down his torn shirt and spattered against the

marble floor.

The wounds were closing.

But not nearly as quickly as they had before.

He noticed it.

His crimson eyes narrowed slightly as he wiped blood from his lip with the back of his hand.

“You’re stronger than you should be,” he muttered under his breath.

A low growl rumbled through my chest,

Aurora’s face flashed through my mind again.

The thought ignited something inside me.

The pain in my ribs faded beneath the surge of fury that followed.

I lunged again.

Lazarus moved to intercept, his hand shooting forward to grab the thick fur at the base of my neck. His fingers tangled there as he tried to force my head downward, using his weight to pin me.

The pressure was overwhelming.

His strength was monstrous.

My paws scraped against the marble floor as he pushed down harder, trying to force me into submission.

But my wolf twisted violently beneath him.

My claws slashed upward, tearing across his stomach before he could tighten his grip.

The vampire hissed sharply and staggered back a single step.

Just one.

That was all my wolf needed.

I surged forward with everything I had left.

My body slammed into his with crushing force, driving him backward across the ruined penthouse. Broken glass crunched beneath our feet as I forced him across the floor until his back collided with the wall.

The impact cracked the plaster behind him.

Dust rained down from the ceiling.

Lazarus tried to recover his balance, his hands snapping up to shove me away.

But I didn’t give him time.

My claws dug into his shoulders, pinning him against the wall as my jaws snapped Inches from his throat. Its hands slammed against my shoulders, straining to hold my head back as my teeth hovered dangerously close to his neck.

We strained against each other.

His strength pushing against mine.

His boots scraping across the marble as he tried to force me back.

My claws dug deeper into the wall for leverage.

The marble floor beneath us groaned under the pressure.

Then my paw struck something on the ground.

Wood.

One of the shattered table legs lay nearby, splintered into a jagged length from the destruction of the fight.

My wolf noticed it instantly.

Instinct took over.

I released one paw and grabbed the broken wood in my jaws.

Lazarus saw it at the same moment.

His eyes widened slightly.

“You think that will-”

I swung.

The jagged wood slashed across his throat.

The edge cut deep, but not deep enough.

Dark blood sprayed across the floor.

The vampire snarled and shoved against me with sudden force, trying to break free.

I staggered back half a step.

But I didn’t drop the weapon.

My wolf lunged forward again, fury burning through every muscle.

I swung the broken table leg once more.

Harder this time.

The sharpened wood tore across his neck with brutal force.
